Overbore cartridges

Call it whatever you want but some cartridges just get the same or more done, with less. That sounds a lot like the very definition of the word efficiency.

Definition of efficiency

1: the quality or degree of being efficient

2a: efficient operation

b(1): effective operation as measured by a comparison of production with cost (as in energy, time, and money)

(2): the ratio of the useful energy delivered by a dynamic system to the energy supplied to it

Prior to the modern slower burning powders we are blessed with today, the 25-06, 257 Weatherby, 257 AI, 264 Win Mag, etc, were considered barrel burning "overbore" cartridges. This is no longer true.

As compared to what? I believe that barrel life is greatly about heat and time. Slower powders burn at roughly the same temps as faster ones, but for longer.

A good example to support my position is your 25-06 shooting 117's at 3000fps, vs a 30BR shooting 118's at the same speed. Which one has the better barrel life and which one will shoot the best?

As compared to any other bore capacity cartridge. Barrel life is not being asked about, and like the brass, primer, powder and bullet, is a consumable. Let's get the words right before continuing. "OVERBORE" isn't the word. Bore Capacity, is. A cartridge is either at capacity, or, over capacity. The word "overbore" is meaningless in this application. With modern powders, we can increase velocity without increasing pressure, using the right powders.

Does this mean my new barrel on my Tikka T3x that I had rebarreled to 6-284, going 4400 w/55 bal tips is just a little overboard too?? :) Dang it!

It's all relative. I read Bart once said the Dasher was overbore. I wonder what you would call my 25-26 nosler. Some of you fellas on here are overbored. But once TRA posts it's over with. Can't argue with him. My mom used to tell me I'd argue with a telephone pole. After a concrete light pole pulled in front of me one day I guess I started to mellow a little. Christmas is coming, l hope y'all had a good year. Stephen
