milling a left port

i was hearing a guy at the range saying he saw a savage taregt right port action, that had a left port milled, has anyone heard of this.

No reason it can't be done. I had a dual port Stolle action nearly 20 years ago.

Savage builds factory dual port actions. I've heard of it being done on standard actions, the factory ones use smaller ports so to leave more material at the top of the action.

Not a problem with some actions . I was just explaining the requirements for a action .
Need a ejection port , not a sporter type with the top of receiver is cut away .
A bolt with a guide on it for anti bind ( not an absolute but makes cycling easier )
No ser # in the way of material that needs to be removed .
I currently like the Rem 783 . Completely cylindrical , bolt head guide , 90 deg sear ( not relevant )
The sav target action
The Axis isn't as good due to having no bolt guide , it depends on the completely enclosed left lug raceway . When you remove some of the the bolt head needs it front edges chamfered .
Good luck . These are just my requirements and processes .

Ps the left load is so much easier for me .

Yes had it done by fred o f sharp shooters and also converted it to a left hand bolt came out rather nice on a 284 win. target action.

Thatll work better. Keep em as small as possible. Think of the strength and straightness of a pipe then cut a slot halfway thru it and see if it stays straight or will bend any easier

Sometimes we do things not because they are economical, or practical, or they are cheaper in the long run or may have a better resale. We do them because we can and they are a challenge.

i have to disagree , ports are small enough action is bedded correctly , all said and done it is still a tube unlike a standard action .if I knew before hand that the target action could be converted from a right hand to left i would have gotten a left hand port and had bolt converted.

I take it youve never checked straightness of an action before and after. I assure you bedding cant keep it straight. They wont even stay straight without a barrel on them but hey when you buy an action its a free country. Most times with a better fitting bolt youll know if theres been another port cut in it- single shot thick br custom actions cant stay straight but most people would never know

Factory, custom, single shot, dual port, cylindrical, flat bottom,they all bend when you touch off a 65,000 psi powder charge inside the barrel that is threaded to them. The trick is getting all the components to settle back down the same after each shot.
