Best range finder to buy

I was told, it doesn't work as good as the original. I know i have the original and we compared against a lot of others. It simply outperfomed them all. Another good one for the money was Swarovski. Most times it would do 1500. They also stopped making it. Matt
I have the original Terrapin and my buddy just got the new one. Side by side they are the same out to 2300 or so. If I was in the market, I would look at the new one. On the big plus side the optics in the new one are 8x. The original is 5x

One thing to note regarding the older Terrapins...buyer beware. They are no longer supported so if anything goes wrong, you are SOL. The newer “X” version, while maybe not as good, is covered with a warranty should you have a problem. My understanding is the new version, as Moondog stated, is comparable out to 2200-2300 yards.

Some 2000 have been known to do some "weird" things now and then, I played with one that would just start scanning for no reason and then just get hung up on a range it measure in that scanning faze.

Get the 2700 or have a look at the new 2400 if you don't need any "ballistic" data. IF you want to go to the next level the Terrapin is obviously the way to go

From what I've read, the Leica 2400r is pretty good at $500. I've been back and forth lately looking at the new ones. I ordered a Leica 2700b model. I've heard it can reach over 3000 yd's, we will see later today.

Leica 2700 is the best resonably priced LRF bar none in budget offerings Nikon Black 4K is best bang for the buck but there are lots of lemons among them same with Sig Sauer .
I just upgraded to Terrapin X but its whole different league ,but going over 5 LRFs in couple of years i decided its enough and forked over for the Terrapin X that should be good for years to come

I tried the 2700b today. There was quite a bit of smoke in the air today, but it still hit 2190 hand held off a building. It was doing 1900 off a grassy bank. Mine came with a free tripod mount, so I'll put it in that and see how far it will go. So far it's pretty impressive.

I've had a bunch of Leicas from 900's up to my now 2000 model. All have done exactly what they were advertised to do. I have used a bunch of other brands and have been nothing but disappointed in them. Friends buy model x, use mine & get rid of theirs.

Tagging in, just sold my kilo 2000 and am looking at the leica 2700b until the perfect r.f. shows up. I think the terrapin x could and should have had a display on the unit to give ballistics, weather the kestrel sent the data back or it was able to have a solver on board.
Looking at the specs of the laser it does not look very different at all and for almost 2x the price and size.

Botach in Nevada has the 2700 with free mount for $699. $719 delivered. Considering the mount is $100, it's about $300 less than other places. I think this and my kestrel will be enough for me. It ranges beyond what I'll be taking shots at. Today I was ranging stop signs past 2200 yds and they were angled 20-30 degrees. Very fast returns. I also checked the beam on power lines, and it seems the laser is centered very well in the circle.

Did you have to call them to get that price? On their site it shows more
