F/TR Shooters: What is Your Favorite Bi-Pod?

Flex-Pod - it still amazes me how many people simply won't try it as they dislike the idea of a 'bendy' device. This should definitely be considered by those who grew up with the Harris and similar and like to 'load the bipod'. For those who prefer models that slide / track on the ground (and they're the norm in the UK as we mostly shoot off grass turf), Tier-One Carbon, The Shooting Shed's 'Stotteben IV', Dolphin Gun Co. 'AB Bipod', and Joy-Pod are all excellent. The Tier-One Carbon and Stotteben are really wide (2/3 metre between the feet at low settings and the 'AB' is only just shy of this width) and very stable - I now use bipods nearly all the time in F-Open instead of a front-rest.

In GB F-Class Association league rounds and among top club FTR shooters we see more Joy-Pods in use than any other single model, but Stottebens, T-1 all-metal and Carbon models, Mystic MPods, Dolphins are scattered around the field. With my retirement from top-level FTR, probably only the FLEX-Pod won't appear.

Laurie,

Your first sentence is exactly what I've seen in regards to the Flex bipod. Most folks look at it and simply won't try it. After shooting damn near every ski bipod known to man I've personally settled on the Flex pod myself. It's the only bipod I can shoot and stay on target through recoil with heavy bullet loads at the speeds I run them in FTR. Tighter vertical for me as well compared to the others. To each his own.

I’d love to fuss with one. Seems like a neat concept. I don’t particularly LOVE loading a bipod, as for me it’s something I need to remember, but my rifle shoots much better when driven than when it’s allowed to do as it pleases.

I like my Duplin, but it's not perfect. The design needs a 2nd iteration. The backlash is horrid - maybe it needs an acme thread. It's very light as is, but they could shave a bit more off and get rid of some sharp edges by getting rid of those confederate flag logo plates, and by removing a little more metal in certain places. Speaking of sharp edges, the adjustment wheel needs some attention. The bottom of the feet are rough, and need to be polished. This is really petty, but the screws that hold it together aren't the same length, and it would be better to use hex head screws instead of the flat head screws.

The worst part, though, is that it can slip under recoil. This could be fixed by implementing a lock on the adjustment. I've fixed it with purple loctite, but that doesn't last very long and it shouldn't be necessary.

It's just a few things that need cleaning up that would make it undoubtedly the best one out there in my eyes. Most of these fixes are pretty easy and wouldn't cost much if anything to implement.

I have been using the Duplin for some time now. I like it Some of the issues others have had, I have not experienced at all.
I do have the JoyPod on order, I like the idea of adjusting the windage and elevation from the joy stick as apposed to adjusting the rear bag. But, to be honest, I haven't shot one yet.
As stated by previous members, they all work very well, they offer different configurations, weights, adjustments, etc. All have been in the winners circle. It is a matter of what works for you and what you like.

As my rifle has sling studs I use the Sinclair for FTR. When shooting our varmint matches I use a Harris per rules of having a field/folding bipod. Would like to try the FlexPod, but would need to install a rail first.

I’ve owned a Sinclair, a Joypod and a Phoenix, I currently now just own a Phoenix. For me, it tracks better, and there is much less bipod hop. Full disclosure, I shoot on the MI FTR team and Phoenix is a sponsor, but I bought mine before joining the team.

Joy-Pod all the way. i use it in both F/TR and F Open (.308/6BR). i shoot almost free recoil with both and it works fantastic. add the Pod Pad, and the shot to shot tracking will improve a lot, especially with the .308. with the heavy 6BR rifle, it almost tracks like a front rest

I only own a Sinclair and if I keep it screwed all the way down, as low as I can go, and squeeze the rear bag carefully, I do well. Still I am moving to F-Open next season.

The Tier-One 'Carbon' comes with Freelander / Anschutz rail plus bipod stud attachment fittings. Presumably, its manufacturers Evo Leisure Products would also supply the smaller all-metal 'FTR Bipod' with such a gizmo too if asked in addition to the rail fitting block.

With both FLEX-Pod and Joypod, I found best results by switching to a heavy stiff-packed rear bag, a Mini-Gator with handle to carry the damn thing when full of Chromite sand, instead of a softer bag as I'd used previously with squeezing with conventional bipods. These two bipods allow, in fact need, all fine elevation adjustment to be done at the front end and the rear wants to be as stable and well supported as possible. ie just what the F/O shooters do with their front rests. This pair also allow the use of ultra long forend stocks, another stability plus. I'm convinced that soft rear bags / squeezing risks inducing some elevation variations into the rifle handling as well as risking moving the bag around and risking buttstock tracking issues.

One final plus on avoiding squeezing is that I prefer chassis / tubegun stocks, Dolphin, Competition Machine / Eliseo with AR pistol grips. This brings the bottom rear corner of the grip perilously close to the weak hand doing the bag squeezing. You rarely feel contact during a match, but there can be widespread bruising visible afterwards.
