Best pig rifle ?

I rifle powerful enough to penetrate both shoulders and accurate enough for a head shot during a charge. Some times they just refuse to die, and that's not fun!

.22 long rifle but short will work. One shot 1 kill. A washpot of boiling water and let the scraping begin. Everyting but the squeal was saved. Render the fat down for lard. Make cracklins. Boil the head in the washpot, scrape everything off, grind it up and make hogs head cheese. Fresh sausage, bacon and ham.
The old timers got by just fine with a 22

I have shot feral pigs with .223s, 22-250s, 220 Swifts, 7-08s, 7mm Rem Mags AND if you want SPECTACULAR kills, .300 R.U.M.! To be very honest, the .223s (ALL 22 centerfires) should only be used with TXS pills and the like. Then you really need "close-up", as in 150 or less, HEAD shots to immediately and consistently put them down. The 7-08s on up kill cleanly. But the "crazy" spectacular kills were taken by my .300 R.U.M.! It is amazing what this thing will do. I will share a "real" story. My rifle is a custom job with a 26" 1-10 Pac-Nor barrel. The excellent 200 grain Accubond is powered by 96grs of Retumbo at 3200f.p.s. I was on a hunt and the land owner wanted the "pig / pests" cleared out! One of the bigger ones, about 275-300 pounds was out at 326 (Bushnell Yardage Pro rangefinder) and broadside, feeding. I put the crosshairs about 2" high from dead center shoulder and touched her off. FLOP! We went up to get the old boar and what we saw was unreal! Bone, hide, meat and "internals" strewn all over! Hunks of meat about 6" long>>20 or so feet away! When we turned him over, he had a hole out the side so large that BOTH sets of lungs were hanging out the "gaping hole"! I never witnessed anything like that! Unreal!

despite the gruesomeness, no one could say that was an inhumane kill. The pig probably felt nothing; just a massive smack and he was gone. Left plenty of tidbits for the scavengers too.

OP, here are more suitable pig loads in 223:

First choice is Barnes TSX:

read the reviews and check out the pictures!

Second Choice, Hornady GMX:

Both meant for deep penetration and mushrooming; they're hunting rounds. I won't argue that more power won't help, and sometimes all we need is a good excuse for another rifle ;), but if money is tight, I'd try more suitable pig ammunition in your 223. Otherwise, I'd second the 6.5 Grendel in a new upper for your gun. A 120gn 6.5mm bullet will put down everything smaller than an elk with authority.

I have shot a boat load of pigs in Calif. and like the previous person said which ever one you can shoot well! I have killed them with every rifle above .243 and have seen them shot with a whole lot more! with dogs most were shot at 4 feet with a pistol .357 and larger. Spot and stalk many people would not believe it but most were killed with a 25-06 because it shot very well. My friend that butcherd them would say you got to stop shooting them with that 300 wm but my friend would laugh and say he is shooting them with a 25-06, RW

There are so many ways to hunt hogs and two reasons to kill hogs (meat and eradication), that there is no best gun. Choose the gun for the goal, the area you will be hunting, and desired results. I know people who have to deal with massive crop destruction with the associated cost and they hate a hog so much that they don't care where, how, or how quick the kill is - just die. Or they may be taken while in a deer stand, specifically hunting for them, or as a target of opportunity. That surely covers a wide array of types of guns.

Please don’t think I am being a smartelic just trying to put things in perspective. If I asked what’s the best car to drive from Texas to Vegas in I would have lots of answers given. Some would have there favorites and ones they don’t like. Most if not all would get me there. I’m sure someone would say a Ford is the only way and some a Chevy. V8 no you will be sorry if you don’t drive something with a v6. Heck I might even say a turbo charged moped.

Like some mentioned there is no one best pig gun for any situation in respect to platform or caliber. One of my best friends went out one night with a group of fellers to watch a field that was getting destroyed. My friend was shooting a single shot contender. The all giggled at him while they were holing their ars and bolt guns. He had one in the chamber and 3 in his left hand. When the action started 3 hogs lay dead all shot by the man with a single shot. No one else got to claim any. I don’t remember but he was shooting a 7 30 waters or something like that.

I was once in the middle of a bunch and I mean bunch and cut loose with ten rounds of 7.62x39 and missed all ten shots. A charging boar or sow will be on you before a cat can lick its back side. Getting a kill shot in on one in that situation is hard as hell.

Any number will do the job. I have killed them in traps with one shot from a 22 LR between the eyes and never heard a sqeek let out. I have shot them several times in the head with 357 and had the try to get at me like I owe them money. I have personally seen 6 rounds from a 45 long colt up the snout and last couple in what would be considered well placed in the head and still had enough fight long enough to hurt you bad.

IMHO like someone above said something capable of good penetration.

when you got 30 to 35 pigs 25 yards from you bolt gun is just to slow,,its not for fun here, don't want them to tear my property up,,get sighted on one then spray and pray,,
Capt. Dan
You need a freaking tommie gun for that many pigs.

Wild boar hunting on the Outdoor Channel right now. It is showing the guy from the video I posted earlier. That young man can shoot!
