Fireforming 6 Comp Match

I'll shoot whatever velocity is most accurate. I know many of those that shoot the 6 comp have had impressive Barrel life. I think I read something from Joe senior that mentioned 3000 feet per second delivers very long barrel life. For those of you that are running it at 3200 or so do you see a dramatic reduction in Barrel longevity?
Not sure if I'm your guy, but in 2 barrels, I ran a 105 hybrid at 3100, using IMR 7977, seemed easy, no noticeable pressure. The first barrel went 1800 rds, the 2nd just 1200 with a pressure dump at 800 rds, brought it back for 400 more with H4831.
Norma 243 brass, the pockets on both batches of brass were so tight, it was painful priming with an RCBS hand primer, I used a bench mount< why I say lower pressures.
Edit: I had mine built for the performance of a high capacity 6mm, guys around me were shooting 6 creeds at 3150fps, it did what I asked, if it were not for the fireforming, I's still be shooting it. I chambered a third, had issues trying to get fired brass in the chamber, abandoned it and moved on.

A couple of questions Milo. You said the second barrel went 1200 with a pressure dump at 800 rounds. I'm not sure what you are getting at. Are you saying the velocity fell off at 800 rounds?

Secondly you said you chambered a thrid barrel but had issues trying to get fired brass in the chamber. What do you mean by that?

Thanks in advance for the clarifications.

Yes to speed loss, I had self manufactured donuts on the brass, die setting issue, 800 pcs, easier to move on at that moment.

So I shot some groups to find optimal bullet seating depth with the low (accurate) node of H1000. Very accurate! Best seating depth was .028" off jam resulting in a one holer three shot group of .058" CTC. Moving the bullet .005 closer to the lands brought the group out to .200 CTC. The closer to the lands it got the worse it shot. Average of 5 different three shot groups was .248 and worst of the 5 groups was .411 CTC. Another Criterion pre fit shooting good!

I also did a ladder of 12 shots using VV N160 powder. Velocities ranged from low 3000 to 3250, 27.5" barrel. Found a very wide node at the upper end so I am looking forward to seeing how that VV groups. I am optimistic. N160 is a faster powder than H1000 but it's heat factor is nearly the same so I expect it will provide for some good barrel life.

Question for anyone....can different powders change the recoil attributes significantly? I don't know if it was my imagination but the N160 seemed to have an appreciably softer recoil than the H1000.

The first time I shot RE-26, I thought something had gone wrong with my gun. Previous loads were RE-22 and you knew the gun went off. RE-26 was a whoosh from the gun and I was looking around for broken pieces or gas escaping from the action, or something! It wasn't until I looked at the chronograph that I realized everything was fine and it was just the characteristics of the powder.

So yes, different powder, different recoils.

Don't forget the vapor cloud that RE-26 leaves about 10ft in front of the muzzle on high humidity days. The nice thing is that it makes you slow down so your barrel cools....tough to hit the x-ring if you can't see the cloud, haha. The only reason that I looked elsewhere is because of how the dirty the barrel is after this stuff.

Yes, different powders can have different recoil .I'm going to get a pound of Re26 to try in my Comp Match. Hard for me to leave H1000, I'm getting plenty of accuracy and speed with it, also long barrel life.

Don't do it Don!!! With H1000 or Ramshot Magnum I can go 200 or 250rds between cleaning (based on the groups). With RL-26 I've got to clean before around 120rds because I start to get fliers and shots way off call. It takes much longer to clean the bore with the RL-26 as well, black patch after black patch. It's good stuff(high velocity, slow pressure curve), it's just dirty.

I've been trying some N160. Cleans up super easy compared to H1000 and takes about 7-8% less powder for a given velocity. Haven't found a accurate load with it yet though.
