Erosion of the lands

Mulligan

Silver $$ Contributor
I have been shooting my 284 f-class rifle for about 18 months. Mostly 180 VLD and Hybrids, I have .084 erosion of the lands in 1352 rounds. Is this the norm?
Thanks

To me that seems like a lot. But them I am comparing to 300 WSM and usually only get about .003 to .005 in around 1100 rounds. Matt
Thanks Matt,
This one moves a lot, that is why I asked the question.
It has been this way since it was new. I have to adjust seating depth every 20 shot string if jamming. This is why I went to the more forgiving hybrids and jump them.

There seems to be such a wide variation in these erosion rates. Some guys get very little, but from my experience with 6.5x47 & 6BR, your number seems about right. I have one 6.5x47 barrel that has about 2,400 documented rounds on it. I think it's moved about .160". It still shoots great (for what it is), but I replaced the barrel because I got tired of having to use zip-loc bags for ammo. It's loaded so long, boxes won't close. FWIW, all of mine have been SS cut rifled barrels from premium mfg. Powders have been the Hodgdon "Extreme" varieties. I've tried different cleaning chemicals/ procedures, and haven't noticed any differences. Interested to hear others' theories & experiences.

I have gone thru 11 .284 barrels shooting F Class and it has been less at first and more erosion as the barrel gets older. I usually have seen very little erosion for the first 100 - 300 rounds and then about .0005" per 100 shots for the next 200 to 300. After that it increased to about .001" per hundred. I had one barrel that after the first couple hundred would erode almost .003" per 100 shots - it also was one of the poorest shooting barrels I've had. I think F Class and 20 shot strings cause more problems than slower rates of fire over longer time periods.

If my math is right, his rate of erosion is twice your worst. As for rate of fire, yes the faster and more you shoot them, the worse erosion is. In our shoots I shoot three sighters in the last two minutes and then 10 records in 30 seconds or less. I consider that pretty fast. Matt

Your math is correct Matt.
The barrel has averaged just over .006 every 100 rounds since it was new.
My last shoot, I launched 138 rounds (record and sighters combined) and I have just over .009 erosion.

This barrel shoots OK but it has never performed like my dasher and is a bugger to keep tuned.
It is my first 284 barrel so I didn’t know what to expect.
