What 6br twist to get?

i am planning on getting my first custom gun built and have decided to go with a straight 6br for multiple reason. I will be pretty much exclusively shooting in varmint style matches usually for score. 90% of them are shot at a variation of 100/200/300 and an occasional 400.

My gun the last two years (before it recently got stolen out of my car) was a savage 8 twist shilen shooting beger 108 bt. Would it be better to got 12 or 10 twist and shoot 80s of some sort or just stick with an 8 and go with 90-108.

Seems with the 1/8 twist you could shoot just about any bullet weight you want for 6br. I put a 1/10
twist for the 87 grain v-max but mostly been shooting prairie rats... but with the right conditions I have
shot out to 800 yards so far with good success. I think you can't go wrong with the 1/8 twist. Can't remember
anyone having problems with bullets disintegrating because of the twist rate being to fast in a 6br.:)

Stay with the 8. My Savage 6br is a hammer with SMK 107.

Cory, since we live relatively close and compete in the same matches, let me know if you go with a Stolle Panda custom rifle. If so I have several barrels that you could try before you buy. If not..... I've shot 8's, 9's, 10's & 12's in those matches. Personally I like the 10's and 12's best for those varmint matches. And good choice on the 6br. WD

I got a Bartlein gain twist 12.5 to 11.5", 4R rifling coming pretty soon. It's going to limit me to 80gr and lighter, but I have an 8" twist in my Dasher, and my 6mm-284.

I use a 8" and 107's, matches in our area were mostly 100,200 and 500 or 200,300 and 500. for 1,2 and 300 a 10 or 12 would be great.
Problem I came across is the local matches went to 100, 200 and 300 for score and 30 br's are awfully hard to beat.

If I had an extra rifle I'd send it your way to finish your season.

Thank you, I have had many people offer to send me rifles. Some I don’t even know, but that only prolongs the issue of getting another rifle. I’d rather take some time off and regroup and not half ass it just to finish a few more matches.

Its also not just a rifle I’ll need all my shooting gear, joy stick to my seb, rear bag and basically everything else needed to shoot. So it may take a while to get everything back together

Glad it is working out for you Cory. Wish I had something that could help you out. Hope they catch the scum that stole your equipment.

I am nobody and non competitive but have 2 6BR norma remy 700's with 8" twist barrels and I haven't wished they were any slower. Hard to go wrong with the 8" twist.

Although not really providing information that others haven't my bartlien 7.5 twist shoots amazing with anything up to 107 SMKs. Want to try some 110s but worried about barrel life chasing another load since it is my go to gun.

I wrote a long post on this two years ago after experiencing the same frustration with conflicting well-intentioned advice. The problem (if you can call it that) is that the 6BR just flat out shoots and has the longest neck making it VERY forgiving on freebore selection.
There are effectively two polar opposite "common" 6BR builds based predominantly on freebore, with a third less common option for mid-range bullet specific shooters.
1. Slow twist (12-14) with short freebore (zero - 0.060)
2. Fast twist (7.5-8.5) with long freebore (0.080 - 0.135)
3. Medium twist (9-12) with short, medium, or long freebore dependent on bullet selection.

IMHO, the number one variable will be whether or not you plan to shoot flatback or boattail profile bullets. At all costs, don't listen to any freebore advice based on bullet weight. ***You care about base to ogive and boattail dimensions.*** This is the single biggest factor when selecting a reamer. The Berger 87 VLD can easily be shot in a zero freebore rifle of 10 or faster twist, but the 80 or 88 Flat backs will require as much as 0.080-0.140" more freebore to seat to the same position in the neck. As obvious as it may sound, 80 grainers with or without the boattail, will seat as differently as the boattail length.

Like other folks above, I had superb results with the 68 grain flat backs in my 8.8 twist Brux, even though it was custom built to shoot the 87 and 95 VLDs (I wasn't planning to shoot past 350 yards). If I had it to do again, I would pick a competition class & distance, then pick a custom bullet weight class & profile, and then the appropriate twist & freebore combo.

There is no one do-it-all solution because the short/light bullets and the heavy/long bullets are just too different.

Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

^^+1 That sir, is exceptionally good advice!! If we lived closer I'd buy your lunch for that one. The matches Cory (the OP) shoots in have some VERY exceptional shooters, the targets are very challenging, and there are no windflags allowed. So advice like yours is invaluable. WD

I appreciate the advice. I don’t see myself going wrong with any of these options.

Also as WyleWd these matches are extremely difficult and me being a relatively new shooter I’m trying to use anything to may advantage when picking a bullet/barrel for a replacement rifle.
