Maybe a breakthrough with BRA ?

As many of you know, I have struggled with the 6mm BRA for almost a year. It has shot okay, but not as good as the Dasher that it replaced. Last week I received some of Bart's new 'Hammer" bullets and will shoot them in a 600 yard match on August 25th. Yesterday, I shot some 3-shot groups at 200 yards and shot H4895 and 8208 XBR. I was bothered by the mirage but managed some groups in the 1/2 inch area. The XBR load (30.2 gr.) was too slow so I abandoned it for the H4895. I only tried two seating depths (.005 into lands and .005 off the lands).

Today, I set up at 100 yards and tried a few groups with 30.6 gr. H4895/ CCI 400 and the Bart Hammer at the following seating depths: .005 into the lands; .015 off ; .025 off ; and .035 off the lands. Below is the target and I will try to verify the results at 600 yards before the match (if possible). James

So far my Hammers have not shot well. Noticed a good .5 of a grain difference in weight, high to low. Also noticing a .002 variance in ogive construction also. All my jump tests have been horrible but the jam tests have shown some promise. Testing jammed in .020-.015-.010 tomorrow.

Doesn't mean squat if you test at 100 yards. You need to be out to 600 or a 1,000 to really see what that bullet might do. Right now my 108 Bergers are actually made closer in weight with the same variance in ogive. For the one new barrel I am trying to tune, they showed so much promise I quit testing. Just hoping the Barts are at least as good if not better. My success with the Infinity bullets was never any good. Hope these Hammers are way better.

I am glad you told me all of that, I have been wasting my time .... jim

Larry Larry Larry!

I tune at 100 yards and it seems to be working for me! I think if you understand short range (Which James Mock does) you can tune at 100 and Win at long range. If you don’t understand short range shooting or tuning then its not going to work for you!!!

Can’t imagine how small the .282 I Shot at 600 yards would have been if I tuned at 600 instead of 100 yards! Or how many more Two Guns I would have won this year or How many more Shooter Of The Year Points I would have if I tuned at 600 yards instead of 100. It can be done! The problem is not everyone can do it!

I hope the Hammers work for you but your happy place seems to be with a Dasher and 108 bergers! Why fight it? Go with what you like, quit the BRA, shoot your Dasher get some Bergers! Go to your happy place!

Then there would be nothing to complain about! Whats the fun in that?

I know this is a silly question, but have you ever heard the phrase "If it ain't broke, you can't fix it..."? Was there some logic to switching cartridges?

I’m sorry that I don’t know you any better than I do before saying this but I’m not sure if you realize that in the last 6 months or so, you have more less called the number one barrels in long range junk (Krieger), in my opinion the number one bullet in long range junk (Vaportrail) and now the number 2 Bullet in long range (again, my opinion)junk (Bart’s). Maybe you’re not meaning to come onto a world wide forum to bash these companies that nearly everyone else has success with but that’s what I think when read posts like these.

By the way, the 1000yd NATS 2gun overall was just won with a 200yd tune, junk ass Krieger and junk ass Vaportrails.

Hey Bart,
I disagree (just this once), anyone can do it. They just have to talk themselves into it (and do the work of course) instead of talking themselves out of it.

I would just like to say ! Boy I do enjoy this Post...
I am waiting and waiting 13 months and 15 days for my Dasher ?

I have because of this and other post over spent my reloading account. :(

The up side with all the different Powder, Bullets and Primers plus Mike's Annealer .
I better get it right...

Thanks,
Everyone :)

Can only comment that the Vapor Trails I tried did not work. Of course in that barrel, Krieger, nothing worked. Come to any conclusion you want.

My two new barrels are both Kriegers. They seem to be super. I have multiple other Kriegers, Broughton and two Bartleins. I keep what works and do not consider anything I say more than just a recount of what my experiences were. Nothing is perfect except maybe you.

well i'm into take 2 also .. brand new krieger is chambered in 6BRA again, just waiting on copperheads (same as vapor trails), will be running in barrel next week with some left over hybrids. lets hope i have better luck this time :)

Bart, well I shot a match with a dasher and some of your 105 gungnir vlds and they shot awesome at 600 yards. No load development at all. Slapped 33.2 of varget and jammed them 10 thou. That thing shot awesome. Bullets out of the box.

Sometimes we worry too much about the load. Any decent load can win at 600 yards in f class. Have fun.

I did not intend to start a war over equipment with my post. My problem is that I am trying to substitute good equipment for my deteriorating ability to shoot. My 2 greatest handicaps are age (74) and chronic neck problems (torticollis). I have shot either the Dasher or BRA with Krieger, Bartlein, and Brux barrels. I have shot Bart's Infinities, Gungnirs, Dominators, and Hammers. I have shot Easor EPS, Hillbilly, Spencer (pre-Vapor Trail) and Don Lahr's. I have tried just about all of the Bergers and my favorite is the 105 VLD Hunting. I have shot Varget, H 4895, 8208 XBR, and Re15.

What I am saying is that we sometimes blame everything except what is really causing the problems…...the "nut" at the end of the buttstock needs "tightening'. Good shooting...James

I still have from Camp Perry a " Marine Corp Brain Housing Spanner Wrench" You never know it will come loose at anytime .

DSCF6016.JPG DSCF6014.JPG As most of us know, one 3-shot group at 100 yards means little if it is not followed up with further testing. Well, I decided to test in some LA heat and wind today and see if yesterdays results could be verified. I shot groups with bullets seated .005 into, .010 into, .025 off, .035 off, and .040 off. Yesterday's best came with the bullets seated .035 off, and another good depth was .025 off. Today in the 95 degree temp and switch cross wind, the -.025 was best and the +.005 was second. Since the .025 was good in both mild conditions and tougher conditions, I will probably use that in the match. Of course the "nut" at the end of the buttstock still needs some tightening. Good shooting.....James

If you set a target at 100 and one at 200 directly behind it do you think the 100 yard paper would meaningfully change the 200 yard groups? Would be interesting to see how the groups change
