Savage model 12 Long Range Precision 6.5

Opinion on the above rifle (Savage Long Range) precision for F-Class competitive shooting? I already own the Savage Asburry precision in .308 caliber but I'm looking to gain some distance with the 6.5 rifle. I've done my research and I may pull the trigger on this rifle. For those that have experience and care to guide me or suggest other options please chime in.

I came across a pre owned model with barely 100 rounds through the tube, pictures are attached. I think it's a good buy for $750 cash... Thoughts?

Thanks~

That is a great rifle and I'm sure it would shoot well. The only drawback to shooting F-class with it would be the stock. Being a 6.5 makes it a F-Open rifle. F-Open is primarily shot off a front rest which the HS Precision stock isn't really designed for. I know that stock has two sling studs on the front and you may could possible find some type of track plate like Whidden makes to affix to the front of that stock so that it would ride the bags good. You could also purchase one of the F-Class stocks from say Northland Shooter Supply if he carries them and put that action in it. You can always shoot it off a bipod in F-Open if you want, it just wouldn't be the most desireable way to shoot F-Open.

I started F-Class shooting with this exact rifle. With hand loads I was able to get it to shoot 1/3 MOA. For an out of the box factory rifle, I don't think you will find a better one for the price. The best factory rifle I have ever owned. To increase performance in the 1000 yard shoots I had to add a plate to the fore-end of the rifle. If you want it to ride the rear bag smoothly you would have to make your own stock leveling system. A Karsten cheek rest would be a welcome and easy addition.

I started F-class with the same rifle in .260Rem. I did alright and learned alot. I like others advised, I added a Whidden Track plate and a Karsten adjustable check rest.

I used the rifle primarily as a PRS setup, but wanted to try F-class. Looking back, If I was to start with F-class as primary goal, I would suggest the Savage f-class rifle. You see them on here for sale alot. Not for $750, but typically $900-$1000. Either the 6BR or 6.5-.284 will work great. If you will be shooting more 600 yard MR, I'd look for the 6BR, if you plan to shoot 1000 yard, look for a 6.5-.284 chambered F-class rifle.

Either way, get out there and have fun and learn. After two seasons I finally built a custom rifle, but loved the Savage for getting started.

Thank you, I'm exploring my options and I want to enjoy the sport, learn and become more proficient in the shooting sport...

Cabela's puts them on sale once a year normally for around $300 bucks , just the normal plastic stock one , almost bought one last year , stayed away till they went off sale so I wouldn't... I knew it would have been the start of another project....

Yeah, I used to work a Cablea's gun counter. Right now they are $420. The one I'm looking at now has a Nikon P-308 scope mounted on it. Figure that's gotta be worth $150-$200.

The big problem with waiting till they go on sale is the store sells out fast , that leaves ordering one and I don't like that... I know you can say no but i like to hand pick any gun I buy , bring out 3 of them and I will pick the one I want.... So it maybe better to just spend a little extra and get what you want... I will definitely pay a little more to get what I want so hopefully there's no problems....

I have the savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor and im using it for F/open. Things i see after 1 match. The hs precision stock is fine on my bags but i would like a cheek riser. I am using a 2.5" front bag on my bald eagle rest and it holds well. Savage sent me a new extractor and ejector because my brass stays in the rifle about 30% of the time. My cartridges have a knick at the shoulder after firing. I dont feel like sending the rifle in to them so i am putting on a 28" shillen barrel. I havent bore scoped it but think it is most likely a burr in the chamber. I get a good bit of horizontal spread as the barrel warms at each string. Yes i like the rifle, but honestly think id been money ahead to be competitive in fclass to have bought a used custom build. Granted i have much to learn and my loading is a work in progress as well.
Here is a screenshot of my 500 yard 8" group, this was my firat time ever shooting beyond 300 yards.

I don't own one, but would. They are definitely capable of taking you to Master and High Master scores if your f class shooting ability is up to the task.

Anyone got a hot website for Hornady bullets?

I pay $26.50 for Hornady 140 gr locally. Any websites offerering bulk?

If your goal is long range shooting I would consider a rebarrel to a 6mm Creedmoor or a Dasher. Better choice for LR.

I don't disgree but I don't want to put a lot of money into it also.

I just want to say I can do it. No championships or trophies, just to say I did it.

There is a really good buy over at savageshooters.com on a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel. Seller is asking $100 for a little used barrel from an FV.

The gun is capable of shooting out to 1k in competition. I have a "cheap" 369.00 athlon argos btr 8-34×56 on mine, i ran a hornady ballistics calculator before i went and dialed dead on at 5 and 600. Im sure it would do the same all the way to 1k.

Question is will you be happy knowing a 400 dollar barrel will tighten that up. A 275 annealer will tighten that up. The list goes on and on. A good set of competition dies is 250....

Its an addiction, i want to shoot a 200-20x.

My new barrel is getting ordered this week as is a annealez. Im going to assume within the next couple years ill be ording a full custom.

I said exactly what you said when i bought mine.
