I don't think so. I have plenty of redbuds, and what I call ironwood. Different tree.

roger that, I stand corrected. that is what some call red bud around here, aka Iron wood, there are other varieties.

I just wanted to take a moment and say thanks to the guys that recommended Jesse aka jghoghunter to duplicate a stock for me. Jesse was great to work with. I gave him a piece of lumber and he turned it into a perfectly duplicated stock. His turn around time was amazing as well. I would definitely recommend Jesse to anyone looking to get a stock duplicated. He is easy to deal with, has a great turn around time and a fair price. Thanks again!

What style of stock did he duplicate for you? You have any pictures to share? I have a nice piece of walnut with some good figuring I would like to have turned into a hunting stock, might have to try this guy out...
Not to hi-jack this thread but do any of these stock makers do TC Encore & Contender target pistol grips? I have a Contender grip I was ght given than I really like but I would like another one made as well as one or two for my Encores.

How about that? I didn't know it went by another proper name. It's known as bois d'arc in my area, or bodark to the locals. Unless of course you try to cut, burn or handle it much. Then it has a whole slew of unique & colorful names

The top stock is what I gave him to work from as a pattern, it's a Shehane MBR tracker. The bottom stock is what he made from my blank and that's how it looked when I picked it up....I haven't touched it yet. In my opinion, it's a very good duplication, but I'll let you guys judge for yourselves.

We also call them horse apple trees. I have a bow from a Choctaw made from it.
I'm resurrecting this thread, if you folks don't mind. I had a black walnut fall behind my house two years ago and the owner of the farm land told me I could snatch it up. Since we're building a new house, I'd like to make a stock from it as a functional keepsake of this house.
I've always used composite stocks so I'm woefully unaware of the cost and process to get a stock turned. I LOVE Doan's work and the design on his banner is what I'm looking for with adjustable cheek. Anybody have a clue as to what that design is called? Any idea on a cost given that I'm providing a blank?

Let it sit in a barn for another 20yrs. For now use one of the stockmaker’s blanks. Im sure jghoghunter is a great stock man (evidenced by his fine work on display already) and i know hes a great guy but i can only speak for joshb on here. He has blanks on hand and did me a fabulous stock. It can be seen on the do it yourself stock making thread in the gunsmiths forum. It is a work of art not even having a sanding scratch on it.
I have a sawmill and I also do some stock work. Even had a duplicator once upon a time. I would suggest you try to find someone that mills lumber but also knows a little bit about gun stocks. Most sawmill guys are relatively knowledgeable about custom sawing and milling and can get you a decent blank, but many do not have a clue. Take your log to the wrong person or mill and you could end up with a not so good stock blank. Take it to the right person and you could be very happy and surprised in a good way.
As far as "putting it in a barn for 20 years"....well, it shouldn't take that long. Generally speaking, even if stored in a dry place out of the weather a log will not dry out. Most logs, if left in log form and not milled will rot before they dry. You want to get the log {or logs} you have to the mill and sawed into blanks and the sooner the better. You will need to "sticker stack" the blanks in as dry a place as you have and the old standby of "one year per inch of thickness" to dry out is about right in most areas. Sticker stacking involves stacking the boards up with spacers between them to allow for air flow and speed drying time.
Honestly, the proper way to handle a tree if you intend to try and get the best gun stock blanks is to remove it with the root and leave it on the log to have milled as well. I just lucked onto one of the prettiest, best figured black walnut logs complete with root I have seen in a long time and milled some gun stock blanks out of it. Now all I gotta do is hurry up and wait!!!

That's interesting, we have a lot of red bud around here too, but I have never heard it called ironwood. It does grow very slow, but it rarely gets big enough to mill into lumber here. It's funny how different areas assign names to wood. Where I live the trees we call ironwood are "horn beams" or hop horn beams. AKA "blue beech" or "water beech" and are not really beech trees at all. They also rarely get big enough to do anything with but like most slow growing dense trees they are very heavy and have a lot of BTU's so they make excellent firewood...if you can get it split. Out west, they have what is referred to as "desert ironwood" and it is beautiful. It seems to be a favorite of custom game call makers and grips for handguns. I only wished our "ironwood" looked half as good!!!
