Corrosive cleaning..?

I didn't want to hijack the casual cleaning thread...

I have a little over a case , actually 1 wooden crate and some loose boxes of the old yellow box Norinco 7.62x39 ammo I inherited along with a preban Norinco AK.... Neither can be replaced because of Clinton era bans...

I have plenty of other ammo for my rifles ak/sks that shoot that round already , but after reading everything I can find on the yellow box Norinco , some say it's ok , some say it's mildly corrosive etc.. I figured I would just save it for SHTF situation... What's the best way to clean the barrel , gas tube etc if I did shoot it..??? Just flush it out with some bore cleaner then oil the bore...???

Just asking because I have never to my knowledge shot corrosive ammo , altho I do clean whatever I shoot as soon as I get home.....

Thanks
Shawn

The corrosive salts are very soluble in water.
The recommended starting point is using water.
Adding a little dish detergent will lower the surface tension and help remove the salts. Hot water can heat the metal so it dries faster. Just don't think you can neutralize those salts with just a petroleum based solvent. You can't.

After the hot water, dry and then clean with the WWII nasty smelling bore cleaner.
Clean it every day for about 3 days then check it every week until you know it is not going to corrode.
I have an 8X57 autoloader but I would never shoot it with corrosive ammo.
Yes I could clean it but I don't want to take the gas system apart everytime.
I do shoot 8X57 corrosive ammo in bolt guns but never in a gas gun.

You can get more information from guys who habitually shoot corrosive ammo at the milsurp sites.

ireload2 has it right hot soap & water will clean the bore up real nice, and don’t forget when your done to run a patch with oil on it through the bore.

Ok thanks everyone , I have been told to use hot water , just wondering.... I think I will just leave that ammo for SHTF stuff....

I've heard Windex followed by hot water. I'll never shoot the stuff. A friend gave me a new Savage .308 to do a trigger job on. I didn't know it at the time but he had fired some corrosive ammo in it about a week before without cleaning it. After finishing the trigger I went ahead and cleaned the barrel, or tried to. The same nylon brush I had used in my rifle actually squealed pushing it through the bore and it took considerably more pressure. I tried a couple more times and then looked through the bore with a light. The surface wasn't shiny looking, more like dark rust or shot blasted. After several passes it wore a noticeable amount off the nylon bore brush. He sold the rifle cheap (letting the buyer know) and bought another new one.

Personally, I'd get rid of the ammo or keep it for an emergency.

Some of the Commie rifles have chrome lined bores which may be a little more forgiving but still needs to be cleaned after firing. My Model 56 Chinese SKS is chromed. Of the cheaper ammo, Silver Bear has been the most accurate, PPU is better but more expensive.

Nothing wrong with shooting corrosive ammo. Just use plenty of warm water to start the cleaning process. I personally use a pressure washer to clean my AK's. Then use a heat gun to dry it. I do use grease to coat most the of the surfaces. The trigger group I just squirt a ton of oil on it.

Many sware by ballistol but I have never used it.

I may just take it to a gun show , I have heard people will pay a premium for it.... Or just slide it under the bed for SHTF stuff....

Ballistol is used in a 50/50 solution with water, making what Black Powder shooter's call "Moosemilk". It cleans fouling and corrosive salts from the bore effectively and leaves a light oil preservative behind after the water part of the solution dries. Works wonderfully!
