Berger 185 Juggernauts

My bad, 3gr case weight difference.

Fired cases with primers still in:

Lapua 178.2
Peterson 181.1

Full with water weights
Lapua 234.1
Peterson 236.6

Water Capacity:
Lapua 55.9
Peterson 55.5

I ran juggernauts in a Palma .050" FB chamber for years with N150 and Varget in a 30.5" Broughton and got 2750fps with great accuracy. It's not optimal but doable, you just reach peak pressure faster with less powder however due to the short seating depth you get higher pressure and pressure signs faster.

However that being said I've used a throating reamer to extend my freebore for the juggernauts and heavier bullets.

Peterson SRP has about 3gr less water capacity than Lapua Palma, so plan accordingly. You are running a short chamber and smaller brass. I had a similar chamber once. Shooting Juggs (before they were called that) I blew primers in WW brass at 43.5gr in the heat. Everyone here is quoting loads for ~170 freebores.

That said you should be able to run them at 2750 to 2775 and find a node.
Your on the money found node at 2742 5 round under a quarter at 200 yards.
I will check with my Barrel Plumer on a throat job .

Don, see if J. Benjamin has a UniThroater. Or find someone with a 2013 US FTR team reamer, and have them run that in. You really want/need a longer throat to run those Juggernauts at competitive velocities; otherwise you might as well go back to B155.5BTs @ 3k.
Thanks . JB didn't do this one . will give Kevan a call.

Well had the throat re-done. 2784 AV easy.
Varget I think ?? is not the Powder for my Needs with 185's ??

Good Numbers no matter what I change or try poor groups at 200 testing . H-4895 next up.

Yet 200gr. HB group at 5/8" 5 shot at 200 go figger with Varget

I have used both Varget and H4895 with 185s and 200s. Either one seems to work well with the 185s. However in my hands, the recoil impulse with H4895 under 200s is a little too abrupt, more like a sharp "crack" as opposed to a more gentle "push", like I feel with Varget. So I personally prefer Varget for the heavier 200s. H4895 will generally net you about 20-25 fps greater velocity than Varget with either bullet in a tuned load. Not a huge difference, but I'll usually take it if all else is equal (i.e. precision, velocity data, recoil, etc.). In the case of the 200s, my personal feeling is that H4895 is just a bit too fast.

I did a short test with the 200's in a 120 freebore with Alpha brass. 41.3-42gr of 4895 shows a wide node at 2630-2685. It took me 43.5-44.1gr in Lapua Palma brass with a .200ish freebore to get that same speed from this same barrel, just had it set back so it's 1.5" shorter now. I'm just a hair above the N/S junction at this freebore.

Just for the information Book.

I tested 185 Juggernaut's with Varget all ways possible ( I think).
Changed Primers, seating depth etc. I got good numbers on the Crony , poor grouping..:(

I tried H-4895 and the first three shoots in the same hole ( 200 yards) next two just off.
This is for the Book.

Now back to Varget ,add Berger 200 gr. HB and the Numbers are good and 5 shoots group just over 5/8" .(200yards)

This Barrel is good for Powder Sales :)
