barrel cooling new design

i have been thinking about barrel cooling, i have one of those small coolers that goes in the chamber area, takes long to cool and actually you are blowing the hottest area of the barrel towards the muzzle, i was experimenting with this type for the last few weeks and it works much faster than the small chamber types. it runs on 3 18650 batteries, going to try an see if the pic upload works. it slides over the muzzle very loose fit, this way it blows air thru the bore and over the the outside of the barrel. works slick

If the shot impacts string out in some direction as the barrel heats up, it's either stress relieved wrong or the receiver face is not square with its thread axis.

Most of the time the receiver can be squared up to fix the issue then shimmed so the barrel clocks in to maintain correct headspace. Then it should go several dozen shots 30 seconds apart and stay zeroed.

I’m sorry, but whatcha talking bout?

The common problem barrels have bending when they get hot and bullets start impacting away from point of aim. External cooling is somewhat helpful but a nuisance and a temporary fix.

Early prototype of multi fan barrel cooler and barrel heat mirage remover. Battery is re-chargeable and will last 4-5 hours on one charge. (although it does not look like it, all the fans are lined up with the barrel, from muzzle to chamber)

We've beat this horse so there's nothing left but bones. I use a small cooler with ice cubes and water, soak facecloths and wrap the barrel. If it's cool weather, remove bolt and stand gun on buttstock, chimney effect will cool it quickly. If you want to move air, what works good is an airmattress pump, rod guide and tubing.

rod and tube guide is not much better than the barrel cooler that sets in the chamber, plus you are blowing air thru the hottest part of the chamber towards the muzzle, my set up blows air thru and over the OD of the barrel muzzle end towards the chamber.

Chet, the hottest part of the barrel will be the first 4-6 inches of the bore; cooling breach to muzzle lets the 'coldest' air get to the hottest area first.
possible. maybe with the small barrel cooler that is on the market that goes in the breech area, with my infrared temperature monitor, my cooler brings overall temps down faster, quite a bit in fact. this fan moves alot of air.

Yea...I gave up on the 'yellow' in the breech cooler; too low of a flow rate. I use a rechargeable mattress inflater with a tube in the breech to get the job done now.

Several years back Precision Shooting had a small article about barrel cooling. The guy that wrote the piece said that he took a worn out case that had been shot through his particular gun, drilled out the primer pocket and threaded the end of the case for a fitting with a short section of hose with a quick connector on the other end. To this end he would connect a small gas cylinder and blow air, or maybe some other compressed gas through the barrel. He would insert this into his gun after shot strings, crack the valve on the cylinder and the rapid release of air rushing through the barrel would cool it down after a few seconds.

Kinda looks like a cooling fan for a laptop computer. They really move some air.
yes, they do move air by volume not by pressure, so if you restrict the area down to a example a 30 cal hole, its not too effective. it works best fitting loose over the muzzle it moves air thru the bore and the outside diameter, i got the fan off of my buddy who got them on ebay they are about 4.5" sq housing 12 volt .75 amp. the batteries are excellent and free and all you need to buy is a battery charger for the 18650 type batteries, the fan runs around 3hrs on a charged set of batteries.

have fun

I have a rig with an old lucas bore guide threaded with some 1/2” tygon tubing going to it from a water feature pump set in an old icechest and a rig that slips over the muzzle like a patch hog and a 3/4 rubber heater hose hooked to it going back into that icechest. It takes about 30 seconds to cool a barrel and im sure you could find a dc pump instead of my water feature ac pump. Ive found you dont even need ice (doesnt last long anyway.) most of the time i use the old towel in the icechest trick- it works every time.

Over the decades of hearing about all the ways to cool a barrel 'cause shots start going away from point of aim as it heats, I'm convinced doing what is popular to temporarily cure the cause timt after time after time is more important than permanently fixing the problem heating up barrels cause once.

Years ago, shooting handgun silhouette I made a barrel cooler. I made a shoe shine box with a 12 volt school bus fan (the kind to cool the driver, bought at Napa) and a rechargeable motorcycle battery. Remove bolt sit in front of the barrel and flip the switch. Moves a lot of air.
Still have it.
