Anybody "moscow match"ed Wolf 6.5 Grendel ammo?

Thinking about setting up a 6.5 Grendel upper for my AR. Sizing and fireforming brass from 7.62x39 seems like a lot of work (and brass 7.62x39 isn't that easy to come by anyways). Cheapest grendel brass Midway has is 55c/ea if you buy them by 250, 78c if you buy them by 50, at that price I pretty much lose interest and swing back to just sticking w/ 223.

However, I can get the Wolf steel case for about 30c a round loaded delivered. I'm thinking if you pull the bullet, redrop the powder for a little more consistency, and seat a decent bullet (ala mexican match 7.62x51) you could end up with a pretty decent round capable of building a little stockpile up of without tying a bunch of $ up in brass.

I realize in the long run since the brass has the longevity it'd be cheaper, but since it wouldn't be shot very much, and most of the rounds would just sit in reserve it'd take a REAL long time to realize any savings, plus if it's shot in the field hunting or target shooting you're going to lose it anyways.

Just a thought, I'll probably never end up doing anything with it though.

Then dont build one... no reason to if you dont plan to do anything with it.

Sounds like a itch to spend money and play with new toys building something for fun, way more than a need or a real want..

I Moscow matched some Golden Tiger 7.62x39 ammo for an AR15 chambered in 7.62 x39, substituting Lapua 123 gr fmj bullets.

it already shot quite good with the stock Golden Tiger, with 3/4 to 1.5 inch groups for 5 shots at 100 yds not uncommon. frankly the Lapua bullets did not shoot any better the the GT.

I built a Grendel 6.5 without doing research on the ammo. It is fairly hard to come by and expensive. I just wanted a better hitter for hogs on the AR platform. Maybe should have looked harder at the 300 blackout.

It is expensive when you buy it. It is slightly less spendy if you buy a case at a time. The only way to really go is to handload.

I think you are onto something with the 6.5 for hogs. You still have plenty in the mag and recoil is not as bad as a 308 so you can keep shooting instead of fighting your rifle.

The bullets in the steel case 6.5 Grendel have a different diameter than American .264" bullets . Just like if someone reloads 7.62x39 they need to use .311" instead of .308" bullets for better accuracy .

I wish the Grendel Wolf ammo used HP bullets like the 7.62x39 Wolf ammo. I shot a lot of game with the 7.62x39 HP Wolf ammo.

I just finished rebuild two AR's, one 5.56 the other was a 7.62x39 into 6.5 Grendel's. I' not sure either will be shot much, but I wanted some better than the 5.56 to shoot deer and hogs. Then I axed the 7.62x39 to eliminate ammo being swapped by accident.

Originally planned to just buy factory ammo, but because no HP Wolf, I ended up with a bunch of Hornady brass...next thing I knew I had a new set of dies...lol...

Reloading the Grendel is like buying components for everything else now days. If it works good then its expensive. I have brass, bullets, primers, and an AR set up to shoot one now. Where I have balked is paying over $20 for a 10 rd magazine. I havent even shot the rifle yet.
