6BR dog popper

Flyshooter

Silver $$ Contributor
Just got back from shooting prairie dogs, brought along an old caliber with a new twist.....Well it's not new, but it's new for me.
This past winter I purchased a 6BR reamer from PTG, zero freebore & minimum case specs. Having a used 6mm 14T barrel or two laying around I chambered one up for my XR100 and since I also had a 700 barrel nut on hand I used it.
Normally I'm a solid .220 swift guy, but I gotta tell ya that 6BR zero freebore contraption is quite impressive.....case full of AA2230 & 58 vmax's really do shoot flat and with continuous jaw dropping accuracy. One of those "one off" things that doesn't look that flat on a ballistic's chart, but in real life practical application it exceeds expectations. And I've shot a lot of different calibers at PD's, both .224 & 6mm calibers, which is why I prefer the .220 swift, now I found it's equal. I've read where a fella said that "accuracy makes up for a lot of BC"......I'll testify that it certainly doesn't hurt. I should note that in the past I shot/tried a 6 BR with a standard freebore and 70 NBT's.....shot like a .222 IMO, accurate ....yes, but felt like I was lobbing bullets.......not so with this 6BR zero freebore dog popper!
This is just an FYI post based on one guys experience in case your contemplating building another dog gun and don't know what to try next.

The 6br accuracy is well known...I built a 6br 10 twist with zero freebore to shoot the 87 grain v-max.
I couldn't be happier as it is my new long range prairie rat killer. I enjoy shooting and testing my long
range skills and seems with this set-up I am able to use less ammo per hit at the longer ranges. For
example ...I was shooting rats at 725 yards and nailed one on the seventh shot the last time I was out
shooting. Sometimes I do better than that but I just love to challenge myself at the longer ranges.:D

been using a 6BR for 16 yrs.......

kilt countless numbers of p/dogs

even a few coyotes that snuck in for free lunch

70's work better in the 6 Dasher or 6 BRX, 3600 fps with H335 & 7 1/2's...you don't feel like you are shooting a 222! 70g TNT, and 70g Sierra Blitz kings, 65g V max are simply out of this world.

Put a WTB on this site for used Benchrest 24", max heavy varmint barrels. My first 6 BR squirrel rig was on a used Atkinson cut rifle barrel in 14 Twist with zero freebore. 60g Sierra's detonate ground squirrels and make p. dogs fly. I shoot AA2230 and H335 with thick cup primers. H322 is the all weather powder, but I am not into that due to the moderate climate where I live. I also shoot H335 and AA2230 with the light bullets in the 6 BRX and 6 Dasher with 70-75g bullets, fast, accurate, and clean.

70 TVTs and 70 Varmageddon work outstanding in 243. I have a 12 twist that I am going to rechamber for 243 so I can shoot it on a dog town and not worry about burning up one of my good barrels :)
