Cleaning ?

Not squeaky clean its like using butch’s bore shine on a few patches then some bronze brushing then more butch’s. Keeps the carbon at bay and a bit of the copper. You gotta find out what your barrel likes- the older they get the more aggressive you have to be sometimes

Yes, exactly. I can see that.

Interestingly, I have never used a brush in my life.

Making a statement like this kind of tells us you have not shot a lot in your life.

I have been shooting rifle for 25 years. Just never liked brushes. I use moly bullets and the Walt Berger cleaning method. Always have. Seems to have worked for him. Tubb did pretty well with moly. I met Mr. Tubb this year at the Wannamaker gun show, he didn't seem to be a foolish man.

You say a lot of caustic things on here. But as I am starting to notice, it seems to be all too common to call someone's pedigree into question on this board instead of simply addressing the topic. Drop in. Say some insulting off hand comment, the poster responds, then the pack jumps on. It is kind of thing here.

You should give a brush a try. Dont even worry about the nylon ones get a good bronze one. Gotta get into those crevices. Not sure walt has used moly in many years though but as good a shooter as he is if he gave you a procedure then by all means it works. He is able to figure out what works and what doesnt on the target. Not many people shoot moly anymore so i guess your own findings is what you should go by. Dont get stuck on info you find on the net there has been a ton of cleaning agents released that will make your life easier.

I appreciate that. Well, I have updated my method, I use Bore Tech Eliminator which is amazing how well it works. It will spoil you how well it will eat away at everything in the bore if you let it sit a bit. I used to use Kroil but Bore tech replaced the Kroil.

Depending on the shooting I am doing I deep clean with JB Paste and tight patch (I know heresy right?). I watched one of the discussions about JB/Iosso paste and I was amazed at some of the posts, and the venom with which people will argue over cleaning a barrel. I will not even address the crazy misinformation that screams around the Internet as fact.

My friend in the club has a Hawkeye borescope and I got a chance to look at my cleaning method in my two Rock Creek barrels. I was very happy!!! No copper, moly, or carbon. So, that was nice.

It wasn't meant as a caustic statement, more an assumption on my end I probably shouldn't have made.
I'm around guys here that do not like to clean their rifles, and their accuracy suffers. And they make statements like "when it opens to half inch or greater I patch it", that's 1/2" at 100 yards, that half inch does not carry to a grand.

Thats real good. So when you say jb on a patch like thats a bad method- is there another way? Jb, iosso, flitz- a patch is the only way i use them. Cant figure out how bristles on a brush can polish out a barrel with an abrasive cleaner. Like trying to sweep a floor with a rake i guess.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Granted there was a trend perhaps 10 years ago where bronze brushes were considered taboo (and for the most part the trend has reverted back to using bronze brushes due to helping address the carbon ring)., but I have been cleaning rifles since 1966 and IIRC even the Outer cleaning kit (red metal box) included bronze brushes -which I used from the git-go. The only change is I only use high quality brushes like Pro-shot and discard them after a few cleanings.

I admit I have been a little gun shy to even discuss the topic considering the last thread on JB paste I saw here. I mean, it is was NUTS. I mean people talking about JB like it was rubbing compound 600 grit polishing compound or something. I tried to reppond and it was just insane some of the crazy things being said... I deleted my posts and forgot about it.

I will tell you ONE thing I recently discovered from asking about on the forum. Something I did not know.

BUTCH'S PATCHES!!!

Oh my goodness!!! Once these patches are mated with the correct jag it takes patch cleaning to a whole other level!!

Sorry, not trying to nitpick or single out your posts, but IME I do not like synthetic patches at all. I favor Pro-shot or Sinclair cotton patches. Yes, I used to use them, but realized I get better results from quality all cotton patches. Just presenting a differing experience based on a few years of shooting competition where results can be measured against what others are doing.

I like the Pro Shot too, they are the best of the cotton ones I tried (I have not tried the Sinclair). Are the Butch's patches synthetic? I thought they were twill.

Patches and jags make a huge difference.

im sure this has been covered and maybe a pretty vague question but hear goes. After how many rounds approximately do you all clean your 6br’s? I have been cleaning after about 25 rounds just because. Ideas please

damn, gotta run to the store for more popcorn..................................:eek:o_O;)

The matches I go to are mostly ground hog matches and just about everyone cleans after each relay which is 10-15 shots. This is with 6br, 6 dasher, 30 br etc. Most guys use a bronze brush after each relay.

Let your barrel tell you how many rounds you can shoot before accuracy starts to fall off. I have seen barrels that were cleaned with just a nylon brush. That is a very bad idea. I have never seen barrels that were so copper fouled as these were. You have to use a brush to avoid copper and carbon fouling. If you do use a nylon you need to use Iosso or something similar, and short stroke back, and fourth in the area that is building up with copper or carbon. Going all the way through with out short stroking will get you in trouble sooner or later. Doug
