223s Falling Out The Sky

Had a couple 223s fall out the sky ln the last couple of days... l have boolits, powder, primers.

l have MIXED head stamp 223 brass... How much will MIXED brass affect my accuracy when

powder, primer, boolits are the SAME??

Thanks

I would worry about pressure differences first, case volume could be all over the place depending on brass.

Depends on how far you are shooting and what your accuracy requirement is. Out to 200 or 300 yards it should shoot 2moa or better. If you are looking for under 1MOA you are going to have to get a little more selective.

Not a 223 but I believe @Rtheurer cleaned an NRA target in practice with a mixed bag of different bullet weights.

If it were me I would sort the mixed and see if you have enough of brand x to run in one gun and enough brand y to use in the other gun, I've had good luck doing that.

I in NO way discount Russ' dedication and efforts spent in improving all aspects of his shooting, but it's a well known fact that Russ is in fact a Svengali, and can whisper bullets onto the target where he wants them.

Seriously though, I shoot some mixed bag stuff on 300y ispc steel, speed shooting, etc. but I keep the load way under where I max out new, sorted LC or Win brass. It's fire and forget brass.

The 223s were like manna from Heaven considering the grief l've had scrounging 221fb brass of late... avg $.55 per case:-( l used to shoot bench rest and never have mixed cases.. Never thought I get the chance to do pds again either Anyway Shooters has unlimited 223 brass for sale by the POUND:-) Now that the Masters golfers are gone lt will be safe to venture into Augusta.. Who knows, maybe the guys will take pity on me and allow a little sorting!!!!! THe few LC, PMC, and frontier 223s l have seem to vary no more than a couple grains... Not bad really... Esp considering this last batch of 221 cases off GB with the SAME head stamp varied as much as 5 gr... With buying 223/556 bulk brass you get to ream all those crimped primer pockets of the military cases... :-( :-( :-(

For an AR? I have two AR's. I gave up on brass sorting because of the volume of shooting one tends to do with this weapon.. For just general shooting I do not worry about it.. I have 2-5 gal pails full of brass. Once in a while I will pull Lake City stuff out and set it apart, but not often.. If I were to compete seriously then I'd be more concerned , but for sport shooting, no.

Here's 5 shots at 100 yards from my buddies Tikka CTR in 223 using remanufactured HSM Ammo with 55 gr Sierra Blitz. HSM used mixed headstamp military cases.

You can decide for yourself regarding the mixed headstamps and their impact on accuracy.

That is impressive,I am now sold on mixed headstamp...I have a few thousand all prepped and was going to do them by maker and test some starting loads . Now I will just start low and see how the mix goes.

I have a couple of plinker AR's. I Use mixed brass and I'm surprised at times just how well they shoot out to 200 yards.

We didn't crono the loads so if there's a big velocity difference, it would make a difference in long-range shooting. I've shot cloverleaf groups with my 6 BR at 100 yds during load development that varied as much as 600 fps. The drop difference would be huge at 1000 yds.

Personally, I'm pretty OCD about my cases all bring the same but this has made me wonder about it more. I think runout is FAR more important than a few grains difference in actual case weight.

i have been building competitive ar's for over 19 years
the bottom is an ar10 308 win small group is a 0.116 bib 134's krieger 1/15
middle is a 223 hart 1/14 26" small is under .2 but i can shoot right at .2 most days
top is a "bolt" gun in 6 beggs( like a 6ppc) still in work.
luepold 36x on each 3" flat fore arms
when people tell me they can shoot 1/4 moa, my answer is come on down lets see you do it.

Plinking, paper stages in 3 gun, why not, heck I choose a ball powder and throw charges.

Anything more serious and at distance, the Lapua match brass comes out, weighed charges and good bullets. I won't take a chance is basically what I'm getting at.
