Marine snipers are getting new Mk 13 rifles

"Marine snipers have been carrying some version of the M40 rifle since the Vietnam War, but now the Corps is about to arm its snipers with a new weapon system.

Marine snipers will soon be carrying the Mk 13 Mod 7 sniper rifle, Marine spokesperson Capt. Christopher Harrison confirmed to Marine Corps Times Monday.

The selection of the Mk 13 Mod 7 closes a chapter in the Corps’ journey to upgrade its sniper teams with a new rifle that will extend range and lethality"

saw this on Defense News Early Bird Briefs yesterday.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane division out of Crane, Indiana, holds the contract for the Mk 13 Mod 7.

Hmmmmm, surprised they didn't go with a Creedmoor.....

When the 6.5x47L came out, the Marine Corps did a test run with it. It was just a rebarrel on the M40 7.62 platform. Evidently the testing didn't go well and it wasn't adopted.
The 6.5x47L is just the red headed step cousin of the Creedmoor.

The cost per rifle doesn't surprise me, with the spares and repair package they buy. I haven't read about the contracts specifications but seeing a price like this isn't much different than any other modern small arms weapons system.

I have a Mod7 (clone, in green) and its OK. Way less stuff to fall off than the M2010, and anyone who's been combat arms knows stuff falls off at the most in opportune time...

The should have just kept the original 700/300. A pound or two lighter, and the only thing that can fall off is the saddle cheek piece, which isn't needed when. you don't use the MIRS rail of the mod1. Attached is a 700/300 next to 95% clone of a mod7.

At any rate, it's a proven platform. Crane probably has hundreds of them mothballed from SOC going to the M2010. As far as I know, they didn't get chopped up and the haven't been sold for sure.

I for one am glad the corps is getting rid of the 308. I know they have been using .300's for a while it should have been standard issue in Vietnam. I for one prefer my goblins extra crispy. No sense whatsoever in shooting some one who needs it in a "nice way." The can do away with fmj's and that puny .223 next. I do think some of our members here could build a better weapon cheaper though.

Meh,

The price doesnt get me that worked up. My PRS rig is hovering around $9.3k with the can, optic, bipod, arca setup, mounts etc, and that isnt with spiffy special molded cases or factory support.
