Dirty muzzle brake?

Will a dirty muzzle brake cause accuracy problems? How often should they be cleaned? Asking for a friend. Lol

Most of my brakes are on short barrels. You'll always get the normal looking soot film which is harmless. Sometimes on a new barrel & loads I get excess build up and stop pretty quick and switch powder. I usually just spray the brake with wipe out and soak it clean when I want to clean one. Can't say I've ever had one effect accuracy but it will sure blow pieces of carbon out sideways. I've been hit more than once from brake debris from the guy next to me on the line.

How many of you who shoot Bench Rest finish your cleaning by eyeballing the muzzle and wiping the drool off?

I just wipe it without even checking........cuz it's there.

So I prefer brakes where I can check the muzzle thru the first port.

This often means mod'ing the brake.

I don't worry about the carbon on the brakes... It builds up and gets blown off. Never hurt the accuracy of my rifles.

I cleaned my muzzle brake last time with CLR, spotless and easy. The only time my accuracy has dropped off is if I did not tighten the brake enough at installation. It will surely open a 1000 yard group up.

A word to the wise: Never clean your brake in a stainless steel pin tumbler.

It will do a great job cleaning carbon off while slightly changing the finely cut threads. Good luck getting it back on.

I guess some things do need warning labels.

+1 on the CLR works great at the range in a cup then rinse it out with water.
