Shocked by Factory Match ammo

I just bought a new toy, Accuracy One's Concentricity guage, and of course I immediately have to check the runout of every one of my handloads! Lol
I rarely buy factory ammo, but I just bought 100 rounds of Hornady Match 108 ELD 6mm Creedmore ammo to feed my brand new RPR that I will be using for midrange F-class this year. I was shocked to find readings between .004"-.0085", with the majority being about .005". I assumed that factory ammo, particularly MATCH ammo would be loaded with better concentricity than that. Have any of you found this much runout in your factory match ammo? Thanks!

Not very shocking as it is from Hornady but I have also found that factory Federal GMM 175 for .308 to be less than .001-.0005 runout which is about where my handloads end up.

I have the same gun. Have you shot it? How do you like it? Have you done any mods? What scope?

I mounted a Vortex Golden Eagle scope on it, using Vortex rings. I replaced the buttstock with a Magpul PRS gen 3, and the trigger with a Timney 2 stage. I'm using Sinclair's F-class style bipod. I've only zeroed it and shot two groups so far, but I'm very pleased with the sub-MOA groups. Not bad for the relatively "crooked" loaded ammo!

I bet if you fired the ammo in your chamber and reloaded it, the reloaded ammo would be more concentric. Straightness started in the chamber, not in the manufacturing process. Hopefully your reloading process does not increase your runout!

Years ago I checked the headspace of factory Winchester .308 match ammo and it was very inconsistent. Remington was a little better but still varied. Never checked runout but once that ammo was shot through my 40x I was able to get consistency when I resized the cases.

Anneal your fired brass, turn the necks and resize with bushing dies, then a quality handload and the inaccuracy will surely disappear. Never could understand why accuracy type guys would fool around with anything but their best handloaded ammo.Ymmv. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Wait till you see the ES on Hornady "Match" ammo. A buddy had a case (1 of 5 cases with the same lot number) that had nearly 100fps ES. I called Hornady and they said that +/-60fps from the velocity numbers printed on the box is within spec. That is 120fps extreme spread. Their customer service was awful and condescending. We bought these cases all from the same reseller and made sure the lot/case numbers were the same. Super disappointed with Horandy. Most companies in this industry have good service and want to make their customers happy, Hornady on the other hand pretty much told me to go pound sand. Ironically the first 3 cases were great, this case clearly was garbage and cost my friend 2 matches. I will never recommend Hornady products to anyone in the future. I gave them the opportunity to resolve and they don't care.

It will shoot that paper plate at 50yds and kill deer. Thats what 99% of their customers want. Its not designed to be precision target ammo- anybody that needs better loads their own anyway
