Another Criterion Success Story

The one thing that will make the Shilen & Remington better than the Savage is the fact that a Jewell trigger can be installed on the Shilen & Remington. That in itself can improve groups. I have all 3 actions and my 6 Dasher Savage with a Jard trigger and Shilen barrel shoots very well but the Jewell triggers on the other 2 makes a difference. The Jard is a 4-6 oz trigger but you have to pay attention with it. It doesn't break as crisply as the Jewell.
that is one reason i have remingtons instead of savages. but i may have to try another savage.

I couldn't honestly say. All the Remages have been for friends so other than doing a quick break in with factory ammo I haven't shot them. They won't shoot with my Savages but we're talking different shooter different reloader etc. I'd like to think the Savage has the advantage with the floating bolt head but have 0 data or proof of it.
i had the floating bolt head in mind when i asked the question. i have a rem 783 which i can use savage barrels with, has a floating bolt head and i like the trigger set up better than a savage. if they just made them to except 700 triggers that would be cats meow. im using the 783 for my savage barrels for now well see how it works. Thabks

The Shilen DGR also has a floating bolt head and mine shoots better than any rig I’ve ever had and I’ve had several put together by some of the best smiths in the industry.

I do think there is something to the floating bolt head...

John
that is aome really good info thanks

All good points/information. I'm sure I sound like I'm on a Savage crusade but I'm not, they're just what I started on because of the ease of barrel swaps at the time. I've got a couple with SSS Competition triggers that are unbelievable but they're (comp triggers) not exactly easy to get.

The next rifle I build will either be a Remington or Big Horn or Shilen action so I can take advantage of the trigger and stock availability. The deciding factor will be how much $ I want to drop on an action.

The new Bighorn Origin is $850. I’d really like to give one of them a try.

well no wonder it shoots so good. try one of those barrels on a box stock savage action and see how it shoots. would be interesting.

I shoot this 3 shot group TODAY with my Criterion 6BR barrel. Bone stock Savage PTA, Boyds thumbhole stock.. 100 yards, prone off a bipod.

I have 7 Criterion barrels and another on order. Great barrels and customer service second to none.

i went from remingtons to trying savages because i wanted to change my own barrels and always heard factory savages were accurate, but found i didnt like the savages and about that time remages were coming available so i went back to remingtons all the time wondering if not having the floating bolt head the remingtons accuracy wouldnt be as good as savages.
now i have a lathe so i dont want to buy drop in barrels but mabie i should have just stuck with the dropins. i do like being able to chamber my own barrels. Thanks for your input.

Bought a used 6br criterion barrel on this site and put on my son’s factory savage 10t with plastic stock. My first ever 1000yard fclass (bipod/rear sand bag) last summer shot a 191,197,197. Interesting and FUN!

shoulda kept the one i had. i do have a shilen select match in 6br with low round count i can have some fun with. thanks for the good info

That would be up to each individual obviously. I'd love to have a Shilen or Big Horn action to screw Savage prefits on but so far the cost has not been worth it to me.

That rifle above is an old model 112 single shot intermediate action. I put together another newer model 112 single shot long action that I haven't got around to testing yet but know it will one hole as well when I get the load tuned. Paid $500- $600 each on GB then sold off barrels, stocks etc to further cheapen them up.

This one's a 6.5x47 Lapua Shilen Select Match I've shot before on another action. I went with the single shot Savage actions so I could get all my good barrels mounted up on good actions without breaking the bank.
I have a buddy that has all the 112 sav single rifles in varmit contour wish I had them

I have three Criterion barrels, one on a 7 mag, Savage action and two on Remington actions, using the remage configuration, in .260 and cm. I am a hunter, not a paper puncher for the most part, and so possibly don't split hairs for the most part as to action accuracy potential. Every one of these barrels has been a half-moa shooter with most of my loads. My buddy said that he has never put his bore scope in a better-looking barrel. I will never use any other kind.
