Bedding Material

Anyone ever use JB Weld Steel Putty for bedding a stock?... Just curious, I've always used Devcon 10110.

No. I use JB Weld to bed scope rings and it works well for that. Also just used it yesterday to bed a seater stem on a seater die. Drilled out stem and bedded with JB Weld with a bullet seated in a case to make the stem have more contact on a large amount of the secant ogive shape on the Berger VLD bullets I use with that cartridge. If I ever switch bullets, I will drill out the JB Weld and re-bed the seater stem on the new bullet.

I recently switched from Devcon 10110 to Marine Tex for stock bedding because testing showed less shrinkage over time with Marine Tex. Blocks were cast with multiple bedding compounds (including Devcon and Marine Tex) then measured and stored away. The blocks were taken back out a year later and measured again. Marine Tex was the clear overall winner with almost zero shrinkage.

Youd be surprised at how many winning benchrest rifles are on the line bedded and glued in with jb weld. On the internet not so much everybody uses devcon 10110 or marine tex
Ya' Man! But you've gotta' do it/use what the interdnet says. If you don't, you are doing it "wrong"!

Not saying it's the best, but it works for me. Buy it at the local auto parts store. Let it start to thicken a little before using. Don't know if it is good enough for benchrest, but it's fine for F-Class! :D

If the whole world only used single shot benchrest rifles with removable trigger hangers and low torque barrels I guess we'd all have glued in rifles the small world of benchrest shooting would be happy.

Unfortunately for you guys, there's a lot more to the world of shooting than just benchrest rifles. Glue in doesn't work for the other 95% of rifles in the world.

Weight it out and you’ll have no problems. If I remember correctly Devcon is 50/50 mix and Marine-Tex 5 to 1 by volume. I can’t remember the weight ratio off the top of my head for Marine-Tex.

devcon 10110 mix is 9:1 by weight ........... 2.5:1 by volume

How much different is Marine Tex to work with than Devcon?

Marine Tex definitely flows better. If you considered Devcon the consistency of slightly cooled peanut butter, then Marine Tex would be more like slightly warmed peanut butter. I would say it flows a hair more than JB Weld. I find it is easier to spread out evenly. Doesn't want to pull bedding underneath along with it as much as Devcon does when spreading.

Marine Tex is 5 to 1 ratio by volume with steel putty to catalyst.
