Different Types of Stainless Steel

OK, I'm so weird that this morning before I was dressed or even made my coffee, I found myself stumbling around the kitchen with a refrigerator magnet. Tested various pots n pans, knives, silverware, spatulas, etc.. Finally out to the gun cab to check rifle barrels. Some things tested absolutely non-magnetic, others as magnetic as the fridge. Most all are proven non-corroded. The kitchen sink was slightly magnetic.

Anyone here care to educate us on the various alloys and properties??

I thought this might make an interesting thread -- if not, well-- I'll take my ball and go home. jd

300 grade stainless is non-magnetic , usually for food grade material or for highly corrosive environments.
400 grade stainless is what is used in gun barrels, also is heat treatable and is magnetic.
There is a lot more to it than that, but this is about as brief as I can explain it.

Yes, you are definitely weird........normal people always have coffee before thinking about anything.

Funny story about stainless.
A guy walks into the gun shop where I'm working a promo. picks up a S&W686 and says "Sir, could you tell me what kind of steel this is?" Our guy says "Yes sir, it's stainless steel." Fella gives our guy a strange look and says "Sir, I know it's stainless but I'm a metallurgist and I want to know what type of stainless." Our guy replies "stainless" and walks away. You guessed it; no sale.
Now, back to your kitchen. I would certainly think the SS on the front of your dishwasher is more magnetic than what's on the fridge.

Well, neither my fridge or dishwasher are stainless. Sink is, and it is just barely magnetic. Our best quality silverware is totally non-magnetic except for the blades on the butter knives. Stainless pots, and skillets -- mostly non-magnetic.

Rifle barrels, very magnetic. jd

To complicate things farther there is Austenitic (nonmagnetic), Ferritic and Martensitic, both magnetic.
