Torquing a mauser barrel, Inner C ring or face?

Thanks butch I need all the help I can if I get in a pinch I will call you an you can walk me through it.
You two are joking right.
I understand though when I started doing acme and square threads on coreing bits I found that there are a lot of custom or unconventional threads out there.
I remember modifying inserts for some of them a lot easier then grinding the whole tool.

Yes I am sir it's all in humor in what we say sometimes just pulling butches leg I have a lot of fun with some of you folks.thanks for asking

View attachment 1037781 Here is a picture of a barrel I removed from a FN action made in Belgium that I have to duplicate the original profile so it goes back in the original stock it shows some evidence of touching inter ring an outer ring which that tells me whoever installed this they made every attempt to contact both places what is right or wrong can't give a pro or con of either way look real close an see if you pick up anything else View attachment 1037765 unusual.
I'll wager the receiver has standard threads not flat like the barrel. I have seen many FN commercial actions the same way. I have never seen a large ring military with this combination though.

gat, the receiver has matching square threads, no I have not seen a military 98 with square threads. As you know, it ain't a 98 military mauser.

Did you put a figure on that wager lol here you go a original1903 Springfield barrel threaded in this FN made in Belgium.20180223_110807-1.jpg

One thing I notice on an action that fits up to the face and inner ring at the same time is the barrel gets tight fast. I feel its stopping the tenon from stretching, if it even does stretch. Personally I like to shoulder on the face.

I got confidence in you once you set your mine to it you will be fine sir.

Thanks. Should be no issues. I haven't tried it yet, but I picked up a tip/trick from the Youtube machine shop community. When cutting square or ACME, set the compound to run zero to the bore axis. That way a small adjustment can be made in the thread width at the final stages of threading, if needed.
I'll wait till I get a REALLY expensive Heym or Farquarson to barrel before I try it...;)

I have cut plenty of square threads, no ACME (yet!) Getting ready to make a new cross slide screw for the Clausing soon.
1/2"-10 Left ACME. Should be tons of fun!

Ken, I bought one and a new brass nut for my 6913 Clausing. I don't think it was that bad price wise.

I was telling Stan that I set my compound parallel to the raceways and it allows you to thin your threads easily if needed. You are correct or at least do it my way.

Thanks Butch. My lathe is a 6300, there is a guy on Ebay that makes new nuts. MUCH smarter to buy it than fiddle around with making it, for sure. I see McMaster has the ACME rod. Which would you use, standard or precision rod? 1018 or 4140? Too many choices!

I got mine from McDowell Machinery in Dallas. Small business and great folks. If I bought one I would lean to the CM over the 1018 for strength and wear and the nuts I have bought were bronze.

Since I missed my guess I think the wager should be you send me $20 bucks if I am wrong!!! So the internal threads are square also??? The reason I ask is not that I think there's any misinformation but I have had several Firearms International Musketeers FN Mausers that when the barrels were removed they were 12 tpi flat thread mated to a standard cut 55 degree V thread 12 tpi receiver. The first I found this way kind of blew my mind but after seeing a dozen or more over the last 25 years I got used to it! I always rebarreled with a 55 degree Whitworth style at 12 tpi and had a better fit in the end than in the beginning. Do not know why they did this but it seems to me they were all 30-06's. Always loved the elegant design of the FN bolt handles!

Here you go gat I hope the picture is good enough for you to see the shank OD is 1.040 a regular 98 large ring thread won't even start in this action.
