Is it too much? Barrel shipping...

It is not fair to say "those folks in WI", when referring to barrel makers. There are many in that state, including Rock Creek, Lederer, Krieger, Bartlein, Broughton, and Obermeyer. There are more, but those come to mind. James

Exactyl...trying not to call the comapny out because they are a great company...didnt want it to be one of those threads..maybe they had a reason for the high cost of shipping...are all there barrels that high???

They make a nice profit by overcharging on shipping costs. Wonder if they declare it as profit on their income tax filing?

I don't understand your post. I believe you take amount of money received and subtract your cost and that is the basis of your taxes.

I just checked , and adding $500 worth of insurance only added about 10% to the shipping cost, and in this case, with UPS, just makes the driver who picks it up, inspect the box for proper packing before he has me sign an extra slip declaring it's value, , sounds like they may be charging a handling fee.
I agree, it should be disclosed up front,
.
We had , (emphasis HAD ) a vendor that would charge us an outrageous amount of shipping to send it 70 miles down to our location. Even the smallest, pump impeller, or gasket set, would tack on an additional $12-$15 charge,, which 10 years ago, was enough to spark a "WTF?" from the customer..

Last heavy barrel I shipped cost me close to $30. Right now shipping charges in the 8 lb range are high on all carriers. If you ship a lot, you can get a discount and some of the big sellers have that advantage. Bottom line is look at total cost. It matter's not how they split it up.

Don't let "free shipping" fool you. There is no such thing as free shipping. I keep calling USPS and UPS asking about this week's free shipping deals and they keep laughing at me. I'd much rather pay $300 and $40 shipping than $360 with "free shipping" but the former would likely get some complaints as a ripoff.

Package declared weight was 3.8 lbs

I had one shipper on Gunbroker screw me a few years ago by charging me over $50 for a std. barrel. I contacted them and they did reply, unapolitically, to the effect that they used a 3rd party and that was a normal amount. I have since blocked that company from my computer and will never buy from again.

I shopped a 28'' bull barrel through the post office couple weeks ago. $30 indiana to montana.
Through work I UPS'd a 26" barrel for $13.
This was without any packaging cost included.

That's fair. It begins with Bart and ends with Lein.

It is pretty simple, if you don’t like the delivered price on anything don’t buy it. Why complain about pricing on AS? Please do tell me how to get more consistent accuracy.
Ben

I didn't even think to ask how much shipping was going to be. It it never crossed my mind that shipping a couple of 20 inch barrels would be $76. I've shipped multiple unturned 30" blanks and actions in a hard sided case for much less than that.

Correct delivered price.....had no clue what shipping was going to be or if it was even included or anything about additional fees....(sure it wasn't, just never mentioned)

because the barrel was listed on AS for sale. Thats where it all started but a great company and a good guy

Seems steep to me. I sent a barreled action last week with full insurance (which doubled the price!) and it was only $41. I can't imagine a decent sized company that's constantly shipping barrels to be getting bent over to the extent that they aren't making some decent profit on that shipping cost. The thing is, it isn't much profit, but it's enough to annoy consumers. Then again, if you sell 1000 barrels a year and you make an additional $20 on each one, then that's, wait for it, carry the 2, $20,000. Still doesn't seem like enough to pi$$ off the customer.

I just ordered a barrel from a wisconsin manufacturer and had it shipped to me in Illinois outside of St. Louis so not a coast to coast shipment. Almost same state.... Got the bill almost $45 to ship ground. Included in the charge was a 3% CC surcharge (which I get I own a business) That just seems very high. We ship about $500k a year with FedX and UPS and get great rates....are these guys (hate to say overcharging) or are they not negotiating there rate very well. that just seem so damn high for ground....I’m going to put it in our system and see what it would cost us....as far as 3 percent CC fee I get it I have huge transactions clients want to put on CC and tell them no or 4 percent ($50k plus transactions) I would of paid it no complaints but most of those fees are built into the price via retail pricing. IF not would of been nice to be at least told. 20 INCH barrel
did you ask them what shipping would be? Thats way higher than i would pay. If i dont ask on only one out of a hundred thats the one that always gets me.

Same here. I watch shipping very close. Sometimes I get in a hurry or I am thinking about something else and forget to check and that the time I get screwed. That price for shipping would have been a deal breaker for me also.

Interesting post. The last four or five barrels I bought came from Bartlein. A week or so before the barrel was ready to ship, they Emailed me the invoice, and showed the shipping charges. It was $32, iirc.
