What do you guys think is the largest cartridge you could safely run in a Savage model 12? It is a short action but being a single shot it will easily run longer cartridges.

I'm running the 280 Ackley Imp in it without trouble. But If I have to unload an unfired round I need to push the bolt release to draw the bolt back far enough to get the loaded round out. - But ejecting fired brass this size isn't a problem. What do you guys think is the largest cartridge you could safely run in a Savage model 12? Have the Savage model 112 338 lapua actions been beefed up or are they just a long action version of the model 12?
The Savage 338 Lapua is a large shank. Also why not go with so.ething really big? 460 weatherby or 458 win mag ? I am sure the 458 win mag would fit.
They are a Long Version of the model 12. - I have both actions.
Receiver is the same diameter 1.350, Bolt is the same diameter as well, just receiver & bolt are longer to facilitate the longer cartridges. And yes, both are large shank.
This is the rifle i will be using. I don't see the short action as a drawback since it's a single shot to begin with. I know I will have to pull the bolt to extract a loaded round but that doesn't bother me at all.
I was looking at the different improved versions of the 338. They look very interesting. I think my first move will be to find a factory take off barrel. That way if I don't like it I'm not out a ton.
Going with an improved version of the 338 lapua is a great idea. It will push the biggest bullets considerably faster. My concern I guess would be using that standard Savage action for that improved case. Even being the bigger target action and large shank barrel. I'm sure you'll get feedback on this from more experienced 338 shooters.
There are model 12's with small shank, and model 12's with large shank and they are all short action designs. Some are single shot, most are magazine fed. Choose carefully. If you want a long action, get a 110 or 112. IIRC, the 110 is magazine fed, the 112 is single shot.
The Savage 112 in 338 LM is not expensive, and is built on a large shank, long target action with the target Accutrigger, and comes in a heavy laminated wood stock.
My model 12 is the large shank target action. I have no need for a repeater. It also does not bother me a bit having to pull the bolt to extract a loaded round.
Well I would imagine the single shot is also a bit sturdier as well without the mag well opening at the bottom. Sounds like it will work. Good luck.My model 12 is the large shank target action. Sounds like you got her figured out. Good luck. Post pics of your project when it's complete. On top of that it is bridged on the top of the action. I'm excited to get started. I think I have rounded up a barrel. Now I need to get a PT&G bolt head, barrel nut wrench, barrel vice.
Not sure if I'll buy brass and bullets or just buy ammo and use that brass? I do think I'm going to get the new Lee large body dies.
