Synthetic Stock finish ?

I recently started a project on new synthetic stock. Its a stock for a XP 100 pistol and it's fresh out of the mold. I've finished inletting it for the action and barrel and am in the process of bedding the action. My question is how to finish the outside of the stock before paint. It is very rough and has several chips where it didn't come out of the mold perfectly. I'm assuming the sandable auto bondo would work but thought I'd see if there is a better way. The entire stock needs some sort of filler and then sanded to prep for paint. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Rick

Epoxy and microspheres for the larger voids, and a sanding overall before primer. There is a good article on this site for painting stocks, too.

I always used lite bondo for fiberglass stocks. Be sure to degrease more than you think, use glazing and spot putty applied with a razor blade for pin holes then an automotive high build primer before paint. I used bleach water scrubbed with a brush to degrease the release agent

Thanks for the info, any suggestion were to buy the right kind of epoxy? I guess the same stuff I used to repair my boat years ago?

Thanks Dusty, That a big help. I believe high build primer is good to coat, sand and then redcoat to fill in small voids before final paint.

Yes it works very well for final shaping. If i sand thru the primer in a spot bigger than a quarter i re-prime. I use sherwin williams automotive epoxy primer. Has like a 5:1:1 mix. I wet sand with 600 to smooth it out then go over it with red scotch brite for the last step

Great advise! Worked well thanks so much for the info, stock turned out great. Rick
