7mm to go to 2 miles

I have been looking around at all of the high bc 7mm bullets and was wondering if one could build a 7mm Allen ,7mm Ultra , 28 Nosler to get to 2 miles and be able to compete in a match . I see that the .375 s are predominate but saw 195 EOL running at 3400 fps .
I don't know if bullet could impact could even be spotted at those ranges ?

Bullet impact from a 180 hybrid can definitely be spotted at 2500 yds, I can confirm that. That will all depend of course on if shooting into a wet berm, or dusty desert, etc

I think the ability to read conditions will determine the future outcome of ELR matches...not so much the caliber. Much like LR F-Class? Where you see a lot of the FTR scores outshooting the F-Open scores until the conditions really get tough where the science/bc can't be argued.

You can bet the best sponsored 375+ shooters don't want to shoot against the local 284/300/338 shooters that know the local condition read, and their system.

I say go for it. You can bet there's a lot of gears turning out there with a 7 STW doing as well as it did in the NV ELR comp.

Do 195 EOL "hunting" jacket bullets withstand 3050+ fps very well?

All I know is that from shooting far, the smaller calibers get real hard to see. You need good dry dirt to usually see them. Also compared to the 338 with a big bullet, the wind drift is much more pronounced. Matt

I go to the MOA pistol shoot in WY and I noticed the impact differences from 6mm and 7mm bullets at 1000 yds . I am probably going to try one this summer .

I am thinking about a 32'' 1-8.5 or 1-9 7 mm questions on 3,4,5, groove barrel .

What cartridge 28 Nosler or 7mm Ultra ?

Regular old 7mm Rem Mag will do 2 miles with the 180 bergers. So will the 7mm SAUM.

As far as seeing impacts, I will be buying the Target Vision 2 mile camera system for practice. Won't have to worry about heavy mirage that messes up the view through my spotter

Have you had good luck at 1000 with your 7mm and 180 bergers?

What do you mean by "good luck"? I try to leave luck out of my shooting. I have shot a 7mm RM with 168gr Bergers at 1K and they do it with ease. Hell use the 140's at 1K if you want. Not like the 7mm RM is a little pea shooter.

Btw: I misread the thread title. I thought it said 2K. Now I see it says 2 miles. That's a big difference.

What I meant about good luck is what bullets and loads worked out for you. Trying to work up a 1k load

Back when I had a 7mm RM, I was using 67gr of RL22 behind the 168gr Bergers. Not a very temp stable powder, but the accuracy was too good not to use it. Just a hunting rifle tho so the load was tuned for cold weather. If still had it today, I would try to work up loads with RL23 or RL26. Can't comment on loads for 180gr Berger, never used that bullet in my 7mm.

There is a bit of difference between 1000 yard impacts and 3500 yard impacts. Matt
Absolutely. There's a big difference between 1500 yds and 1 mile too ! No not in numbers but in shooting that range. You won't just set up and hit decent at 1500 then move on to 1760 and do the same. Not with a 7 RM. It's gonna be work and range time just getting on steel let alone paper groups. And yes, 2000 yards is not crazy ridiculous for a 7mag with 180-195s. What's gonna be crazy is going from 2k to 2 miles. The bullet will easily make it but the wind and spin drift will be almost overwhelming for any kind of regularity in impact. As Matt said, seeing a .284 bullet hit anything at 2 miles will be damn near impossible.

absolutely there is a big difference. I shot at 1400yds and then 1740 and the bullet drop doubled. I did win a shoot last year at 1820yds with my 7mm rem mag and 180 berger but it took all my scope adjustments (50 moa) and the 30 moa in crosshairs and I still had to hold target at very bottom of scope glass but I did hit target.

Imagine 2 miles (3520 yards !!!).

Well I am a fan of 7mm bullets and have had very good luck with 280 Ackley , 284 in XP 100 , 7 Rem Mag and would like to have tried one to shoot that far but I figured it would be a far stretch for it to make it . Thanks Jason

I'll second that the 7mm mag WILL get there. So will my 243 with 115 DTACs. It's just very hard to imagine shooting at a target at 2 miles until you've done it. Some make it look much easier than it will be. My advice would have to be to take your goal out to 1760 yards with that 7mm mag. From there, go out to 2000 yards. Then jump again to 2500 yards. My belief is that you will then realize you are probably under gunned. 2 miles is another 1000 yards beyond that. Yes it will make the range and hit your target. It's just that not seeing the misses will make it hard to put the remaining shots on target. It's tough seeing 300 grain bullets hit dirt or sand at those ELRs. The 180-195 bullets will be much harder to see. Almost impossible. Give it a go but start at half the range and step up.

I been thinking I’m undergunned with my 300 ultra and 215 hybrids for 2000 yards to be effective much less 2 miles. Am I missing something?

I wonder why most the guns shot at the 2k event were 375 and up? I thought nobody hit the 2k target at the first one. At least that's what I was told from a guy that was there. Matt

I guess , I am bored right now and wanting another project to try and will probably just head in different direction . I do have a 7 Rem Mag set up to shoot as far as I can shoot around my area but spring where crop fields are bare . Thanks
