Help: Wanting to Prairie Dog Hunt

I am looking to travel out West for some prairie Dog hunting. I would like some information on how to obtain private lands permission. is there a season on them, or can you shoot them any time?
what state would be best for the hunt? any information would be greatly appreciated~

If you have never gone west on a pdog trip I would recommend trying to go with someone who has if possible. If that's not an option you could look into one of the guide outfits that offer pdog shoots if your budget allows. There are plenty of guys on here that go on pdog trips every summer but most of them prefer not to reveal their favorite spots for obvious reasons. Best of luck in your search.

Are those people just going to public plats of BLM land or something? As a Texan public land is foreign to me, everything is private so really knowing someone personally or a guide service are the only real methods. That is a far departure from what Ive heard about out west but I really dont know how it actually works.

There are plenty of pdogs in eastern Colorado, but if you don't know landowners or someone local you won't have much luck gaining access to land in Colorado or Wyoming.

In South Dakota I would STAY AWAY from:
Karla's Last Kall
Wood, South Dakota

The 'guide' and his brothers rotate people daily from one field to the next. We saw people on the same places we were at the previous days. Very few targets and they were 500yds plus. Anything closer disappeared as soon as you parked the truck.

There are plenty places to shoot PD's in eastern Montana. 20 hours north of Amarillo and a bunch between Dalhart Tx and Limon Co. Check with the MT Guides assoc. for guides that can accommodate. Around $1200.00 a week on the ranch that I'm thinking of and there was plenty dogs!!!!!! The town by the ranch house was 1-2 miles long.

I'll add a little to what I said above about the search function. I've been going west for dogs since about 2002. I've shot dogs in SD, KS & MT. The short answer when it gets down to planning a trip comes down to two choices time or $$. If you have $$ and have no clue where to go your best bet is to make the fist trip to an outfitter who does shooting and lodging for one price. Yes, it will cost something, but if you choose a reputable outfit you'll have good food and good shooting. I've not done it but have plenty of friends that have and it seems to work for them. Also, you can decide if this is something you want to do more of. If you just go wandering around and asking it's hit or miss. You might find something good but you could go home without firing a shot.

OTOH- If you have plenty of time and not much $$, do some research there's a good chance you can find dogs to be shot without paying much if anything for it. A word of advice about this. If you do find a rancher who is willing to let you shoot, don't be cheap. Even if he offers it for free it's good manners to offer something anyway. Not many will turn down a $100 bill or two and they will look favorably next spring when you call and ask if you can come back. It's not a bad idea to send them a gift card for Christmas either.

Good luck,
Rick

Lots of places in SW Wyoming. One good place would be Rock Springs. From RS you can go any direction you want and find the little buggers on public land.

You can buy maps of BLM and Forest Service lands from, Well the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management on line. Then make sure a public road runs by or through a block of land for access.

Best p-dog hunt in the west. Tons of dogs at a great price for all he does. Jim River Guide Service. Google it. Tell Willie, Roger Gower sent you.

Varmint Hunter Mag no longer published. Too bad, was a great read & full of info.

PD shooting- I'd suggest calling the U.S. Forest Service & BLM offices in advance of your trip. Some keep lists of ranches w PD probs.
Try ND, SD, MT (eastern) & WY. near Gillette WY, Acton, MT Medora, ND etc. Then when you are there, stop into cafes,
& you'll get intel. I have had great luck & met some great people. Ranchers are straightforward, helpful & they will tell you they
want PD's shot. (& all of the coyotes too).
