7mm twist

Have a new 26" 5R Bartlein in 9.5 twist, planing to use hunting bullets in the 160 range in a 284 win.
With all the talk about faster twist with heavier bullets, it seems like I may have bought the wrong twist. Many of the factory rifles are 9.5, so is this too slow.

The 9.5 twist will work fine for any 160 hunting bullet you shoot. Including the 162 eldx.

I built a 7 wildcat last year for 180 Hybrids, 1:9 30” barrel. Case starts as 308WIN but shoulder blown forward enough to bump case capacity 13-14% more than 7-08 so 2,800 fps is within reach with right propellant.

Didn’t expect to but ended up shooting 200-15X w/open sights & sling @ 1,000 yards last year, tied a National Record with it.

I don’t think 1:9.5 a bad choice for 284WIN & those 160’s. Build it, shoot it, enjoy until it’s shot out.

I have a 9.5" twist 7mm08 hunting rifle and it shot 175's very nicely. Mind you my deer hunting load is not with the 175 grainers. I was just curious if they would shoot in the 9.5" twist if I ever decided to use the 7-08 for moose.

Edit: to be specific, they were 175 gr Sierra BTSP Gameking.

I'm thinking those 175s would be good deer medicine even being heavy. The speeds wouldn't be so fast that they'd pass thru without doing what they are suppose to do. They should do a great job on deer. I think that they also would be superb for moose at close to medium 7-08 hunting hunting ranges. It's an interesting caliber for moose but adequate providing the right medicine is prescribed.

Yeah I agree. I wouldn't hesitate with the 175's within 200 yards.
If I feel like tinkering some more with this rifle I'll try to work up a load with 175 RN bullets. At shorter ranges I am a believer in RN soft point bullets.

My hunting partner was using RN 220s in his 30-06 on a Northern Woodland whitetail hunt in a cedar swamps area where we hunt. Shots were only maybe 50 yards max. He was hunting on the edge of that swamp where tag alder brush was thick as well. He had a running shot at a buck running a doe. His shot connected with the buck after hitting two Tag Alder trees about 2" in diameter going thru them dead center and still connecting with the deer. The shot was a bit back, 3/4 back on rib cage but the deer was fatally it. I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw the trees. The impact showed that the bullet expanded some before entering the deer. It did not exit but did extreme damage internally. Pretty cool story. Guessing the bullets would have acted alot different had they not hit those trees dead center but it ended with a positive nod for them round nose bullets.

My 10 twist STW would stabilize the 168 vlds but nothing longer. My 9 twist 284 stabilizes the 180 Hybrids but not the 175 ELDX. My 8.5 twist 294 stabilizes everything I’ve shot through it. I’m at sea level.
