????? Reloading 00 buckshot ????

Over the past several years it seems like I've reloaded a million 12 and 20 gauge shotgun shells for quail and such, but have never reloaded shells with 00 buck for hog killing within 40 yds distance. Factory loads are so expensive... I thought I'd seek some advice. Any opinions or links would be appreciated.

Funny that you should mention the cost thing , my findings over the last couple years have been the components are reaching a point where it’s almost not cost effective to reload buckshot.

Up here in Canada we have a manufacturer named Canuck which I believe is affiliated with Kent gamebore and the price of 2-3/4” 9 pellet OObuck is very reasonable... To the point that I can’t buy the pellets and wads for their price.

One thing I would agree with is that it would be nice to Taylor make your own buckshot rounds especially if you can’t get certain brands to pattern well in your shotgun.

Luckily for myself the cheap brand sends the swarm where it needs to be for my needs so I don’t actually need to re-invent the wheel .

ballistic products--corcoran mn...I believe??? they used to deal in all components--I think patch 700 is correct, if you look most likely can buy cheaper than can make. check rio, fiocchi, kent etc.

WOW.... you Guys are correct. Rio has it for 45 cent each, which is way cheaper than what I was thinking.... my bad for not checking around first...LOL. thanks Guys so much...Dan

Dang it I'm disappointed. Wanted to read some good stuff about reloading Buckshot...

It's simple enough to handload but of course you have to be able to count to nine ! :D

Factory loads these days are normally buffered to protect the shot from too much bruising and therefore keep some sort of pattern.
A cuz often carried a 12g when pig hunting and years back I received a 60lb sow he'd shot @ 60yds with 00 buck. I've heard of the lighter deer species also being taken with 00 buck at similar ranges.

Bruising can be described as minimal as velocities are low and for ~60lb class pig, penetration wasn't right through both sides of the chest although pellet paths I inspected broke ribs on one side or the other.

Short of having some cheap lead of proper hardness put away and buying molds to cast your own shot, buying factory ammo might be cheaper.

There are also people experimenting with muzzle loader minie balls, newer design slugs, etc.

Go to Youtube and look for "Bubba Rountree Outdoors". He has all kinds of videos on buck shot loading and shooting and casting. He has links for buck shot molds etc. I bought a combo 00 & 4 buck mold that works pretty good. With the cost of mold and proper wads and buffer etc. it will be cheaper to go store bought. You can find cheaper buck shot sometimes. I bought 25 round boxes, forgot the name, at Walmart for $9.98. It was 00 9 pellet not buffered but it shoots hard and with the proper choke it shoots pretty tight. Believe it or not I found that in my Rem. 870 that a Remington Turkey choke shot the best with this shot. Most of the time 00 buck shoots best in improved or modified choke. You never know until you give it a try.
