Bushnell

Any of you Bushnell fans?
I recall years ago when Bushnell was right along side off brand names on the shelf.
They have come a long way since they acquired B&L. They had grown leaps and bounds in technology. I won't say they were cutting edge or anything. But they always seemed to come up with something new and useful for the shooter or hunter every year. Then taking the feedback and tweaking it even more to be a better product.
Well from what I have seen happen they have thrown all but their top line ,Elite 6500, in the toilet. The 6500 is quality stuff, I own a couple and have had more. It is just not an ideal platform for a hunting rig for the most part. Not an optic I would put on a rifle for packing around the country on my shoulder.

The 4500 and under, have been replaced with the "engage" line. I pushed for them to put a better reticle or offer something different for years. They made an attempt with their DOA, I wasn't a fan but some were.
Their "new" reticle looks like you gave an elementary kid a ruler and a square. No points of reference, to use at a glance, you are going to have to count marks.
The turrets on these I found on all of them I handled to be rubbery or springy feeling. Turn one and it feels as if it should have put several clicks in, yet there was no movement or feel of a detent. A little more twisting and then you feel the detent, click. Reminds me a lot of how a tight bolt feels, it moves a little right before you twist it off.
Here is the kicker and what scares me. Got an issue with a 4500 or other, and send it in for warranty work. You may receive a new lesser product in exchange, rather than a repair.

If their are any industry folks here in the know, I am all ears if I am wrong.
I have heard more on the subject but was told this in confidence, so I will not post on that as it could cause my friends issues.

It just suprised me that Bushnell would jump and go backwards as Vortex and Sightron were right on their heels. I guess maybe there is only so much room for this type of market. This kind of move will let the competition go past you like your standing still.
A quote of sorts from a man I shook hands with one time and am proud to work for, "you are either going forward or backward, there is no standing still because as you stand still your competition is passing you".

There seems to be a couple of trends in the optics industry currently. The first is that QC is in the shitter across the board.

The second goes like this: Brand A introduces scope model which sets the world on fire. As, demand increases, corners are cut, QC goes down, scopes start flooding back in. Brand A is no longer servicing former scope model, but gives credit toward new model, which is considerably more expensive. Restart cycle over again.

Never much of a fan of Bushnell. I did give them a chance though. I owned a 4x with the command post reticle (gimmick) which only worked for 2 hunting seasons. Later I got interested in rifle competition and needed a spotting scope so I ordered one of their high-end models ~$650 IIRC- sent it back the very next day- very poor optics. Settled on a Pentax PF-60 for a few more $$ but at least I could see bullet holes in targets. I still rate them low-scale with Tasco and Simmons -all owned by the same company. They fall into the throw-away category of merchandise- when they fail you just throw 'em away.

I have been an ELITE fan for many years and almost all my working rifles wear them. This year I purchased an elite 3500 2x7 and another in 3x9 and the quality, clarity, and performance do not measure up to any of my elite scopes. I have the same scopes that are a few years older and they are much better. The worst part is that I have openly advocated for people to check them out and the feedback has always been very positive. The two I bought this year are being replaced though as they do not meet basic quality and clarity requirements.

I have 3 bushnells I am very happy with. 2 Elite tactical, 3.5-21 DMR and 4.5-30 XRS, and a 1 hunting scope, 3-9x40 Legends Ultra HD.

The 3-9 Legends Ultra HD has very nice glass for the price, but something tells me their current version is not as good.

I bought a 6-24 Banner for one of my 22lr rifles and it's got shitty glass.

Some of the worst glass I've ever seen was on a Vortex HST. Above 12x it was so white and hazy you could barely see the target ! I think the max magnification was 20. It was a acquaintance's scope. I told him to return it.

Do they fix there scopes.
That probably depends on what model you have. I have several 4200 series in 6x24 and 8x32. They do have a lifetime warranty on this model and they will either repair or replace. I recently sent in a 6x24 that I have had for 15 years and bought it used. The horizontal crosshair broke this past summer in a dog town. They did repair and return the scope. One side note- they made a mistake in the return shipping and lost the scope. They agreed to replace it with a current model that was closest to the 4200. The model they offered retails for nearly $1000. The day they were going to ship it, the old one showed up in my PO Box. At any rate, their warranty is good.

I guess times have changed. Back in (if I remember correctly?) 1972 I purchased my first .270 REM 700 and it came with a Bushnell 4x. I owned that rifle for about 15 years and used it year round. I always felt that scope had very clear glass. And, after the initial sighting I never moved the adjustments ever again. Have to chuckle to myself...The price for the whole package was $125 out the door. Good thing they let me make weekly payments on it!!

Here my 2cent worth. Just built a 204Ruger on Encore frame 24” MGM SS fluted barrel. Natchez had Bushnell 4500 6-24x40 SF 319.00 plus 50.00rebate. Never own a Bushnell. Very impressed looked at some deer at 425yrds thru Vortex Viper 6-20 very clear. Then thru the Bushnell at 20x WOW much better, this was about 8:15. On a 6” target I can see the little #s on the target at 100yrds. I really don’t need another scope but Natchez is giving FS for the next four days. But they raised the price 10.00. GOOD LUCK
