tell me all the good things about a 6mm - 45

Curious as to how fast a 6x45 or tcu could push a heavy bullet? Of course the chamber would have to be throated for such.
The 95's are about the heaviest the case will push at a decent speed. I had one that would push 95SMK's at just over 2800 from a 26" barrel. It was a lot of fun to around 700 yards. It was one of those rifles that always put a smile on your face.

Only good thing about a 6x45 is cheap brass. The ballistics are not exciting

Ok, it won't burn barrels, isnt a Grendal, etc etc. But it is a niche cartridge that like many "older" "boring" cartridges that have been eclipsed by thunderboomers, it actually is pleasant to shoot, puts a whack on groundhogs with 75 grain bullets and will shoot thru deer with BArnes bullets.
I too kinda tilted my head when I first saw one. Then I shot it. I liked the mild report, the terminal hit on groundhogs, and the stupid simple of the whole concept.

6TCU 58 vmax at 3600 PFS out of an 8 twist is a pretty exciting finish on a PD. 200 FPS slower than my 6BR with 5g less powder. And I don't have a stroke if I lose one piece of brass. At 3600 brass will last a long time, it will go 3700+ with reduced case life. My current PD fave is 70 varmageddon at 3250-3300.

Just received my 700 actioned 6X45 Saturday, got to shoot it a little on Sunday.

Couldn't get the velocities I was wanting with Varget and the Sierra 95's. Will go to H-4895 and IMR-8208 next.

This chamber was long-throated to shoot the heavier bullets.

Shot some Speer 75gr flatbase bullets magazine length, 6 shots, 1/2" elevation Windy-conditions spread them about 1.25' at 200 yds.

Think I'm going to enjoy this.

Edited:

No pressure issues noted with any of the testing I tried.

More about the rifle, ordered a Green Mountain barrel as a lark, 1/9 twist as they were on sale, shipping and all, came to less than $100. Gunsmith checked the actual twist and it runs at about 1/9.5 so was just a little leery about it shooting 95gr bullets.

Worked up loads low to high, this barrel was on the edge, lowest velocity, group was 8" at 200 yds. When velocity got up to 2,625 fps, groups came together. Maximum charge of Varget (about all the case will hold) and my velocity is 2,720 fps.

87gr Vmax used the same maximum charge of Varget, shot 2,810 fps. Some good groups in there but I'd like to see just a bit more velocity.

I think you'll find varget burn rate class stick powders are too slow to get optimal velocity. Rule of thumb step up one bore size, step up one speed range in powder. On a time-pressure curve basis the larger bore size will tolerate a faster powder as the chamber volume increases faster per time unit at the same velocity.

I'm not seeing any ballistics of interest with bullets over 80 grs.either.
Pretty much every 6mm out performs it. I have plenty of mid and large size 6mm's that are impressive on paper and targets but fun factor doesn't always show up on paper ballistics. That's where the the 6x45 shines. It's one of those cartridges that is inherently pretty accurate, very mild to shoot and is just enjoyable to spend a day with.

From Whitetail/Antelope on down at mid ranges or less my big powder burners aren't required and a hit at 4-600 yards on a Chuck is much more rewarding with it than my .22-.284. I kill 90% or better at those ranges or less so the 6X45AI gets grabbed that much of the time. When I setup for long ranges 900+ I go for one of the larger capacity cartridges. I am new to the 6x45AI, thanks 5spd and Fredo, and I never see myself without one now. JMHO

Its the 308 of the 6mm world.

If I could get the Velocity up to 2,800 fps with the 95gr Sierra, it would shoot very close to .308 155gr ballistics or .223 90gr ballistics. That may take a 30" barrel which I don't have atm. Those .223's with the 90gr bullets are sure shooting good at 600 yds.

Yeah, just another toy . . . . . .
