6 BRA loads

waybones

Gold $$ Contributor
Looking for a starting point with H4895, Varget or RL15 and 108gr Bergers? Primer choice?

Thanks

Alex

Do you consider the cases ready to load develop with after the first fire form shot or is a second slightly reduced load needed to get the cases fully formed?

Rich

I guess I need to go redo my testing. I stopped at 31 grains of H4895. And I was using 450 primers. I’ll retry with BR4’s. I had tested both Varget and H4895. I wasn’t getting the warm fuzzy results compared to what my fire forming loads were shooting. I Shoot some 2.5-3” groups at 600, Fire forming. Not quite there with the two that I tested.

Very happy with 31gns H4895 105vld at 2960-2970.

Haven't had a chance to test Varget yet but have them loaded and ready to go, starting with 31gns to 32gns in .2gn increments, friend of mine is getting 2990 with 31.8gns of Varget with good results. We are both using 5 jam..

Cheers Rushty

Fire-forming with 105 VLD 29.2 jammed 15k was shooting same or slightly better.

108s always seemed to come in a tad lower than a load with vld's or vapor trail in the same barrel. Both speed and charge wise, so I would look +- 30.5 and watch for pressure. The BRA will take pressure in stride better than I saw from dasher cases. I pierced my first primer in a lot of years a month ago while working with an unknown bullet.... it was the first pressure sign, and even it didn't have an ejector mark or stiff bolt lift.

One thing to note Tom is that the 108 Berger has the longest bearing surface of any 6mm Bullet I know of. I believe that is why you can't reach the same charge weights as other bullets. But, I also have found that the 108 is one of the most accurate bullets out there!

I would advise starting at 30grains and working up. Some actions can’t take the pressure as well as others. This even goes for the same style action. Ask me how I know......

Here’s 4 targets shot yesterday at Memphis in their 600 yard club match from my 6 BRA using 30.1 grains and each target .003 in seating depth.

Same here, Varget with BR4 primers gave me the lowest ES testing 4 different primers.
105 Hybrids shot ok , not fantastic warm fuzzy BR accuracy. I ran 4 different loads Saturday
with H-4895 at 500 Yards. Half the group size compared to Varget. 30.0 and and 30.1
gave me a warm fuzzy feeling! 1 1/4' vertical

Tested the BR Improved a bit more this weekend. Didn’t go so well in swapping to the CCI 400’s. Pressure jumped way up with heavy bolt even with only 30.4 grains. So I test again back same H4895 and the 450’s. Seemed to produce nearly same results. Seems like 30.2 both stayed close to half inch ctc. So I will test around that with seating depth test.

I'm in the process of building a 6brai, forgive my ignorance as this is my 2nd foray into lr br. when you look at these targets that are shot at longer range (not 100yrds) are you looking for smallest group or smallest vertical spread (if they don't coincide in the same group). thanks in advance :) . bryant

Can you continue beyond 30.6 or are you getting pressure? Seems like that is what you are experiencing. If so what barrel are you using?

On my older M action I can go to 31.5 grains but my new M 30.6 is the limit. Don’t ask me why one will shoot a hotter load Over the other but it will. I’m still working on how and why....
