Savage 12 FV a Cabelas exclusive?

Dick's occasionally carries a Savage Mod 10 series rifle with varmint barrel and standard bolt handle. According to the retail staff, it's a Dick's exclusive.

Thanks!! This is very helpful!!
I ordered a Savage 12 FV 308 in Sept, said I could pick it up in November, open box and barrel is crooked in barrel channel touching stack at front, said I don't accept it get me a different one was told it would be easier just to reorder, was told it would be in a week and a half, next day I had an e-mail saying pick it up, less than 24 hours

Yes I plan on doing the Savage rifle build but I wanted to be able to shoot it right out of the box and have already watched all 19 videos, good short and gets to the point

I saw a model 12FV in a Gander Mountain store locally. Priced at about double what Cabelas advertises on a good sale. This was just before they filed bankruptcy, and just after a red hot sale at Cabelas. You can probably guess how it got there.

The savage 12fv that is sold by Cabelas is a Cabelas exclusive and it's an absolute steel (especially when its on sale like now). The 12fv that you see on Savages website and sold in other stores for nearly twice as much is a different rifle. The main difference is that the Cabelas 12fv has a blind mag while the non-Cabelas flavors have a removable mag. The Cabelas model is also limited to 4 chambers (223, 204R, 6.5 Creed, 308). It has the standard savage short action, a Varmint accutrigger, a 26 varmint profile barrel and a cheap plastic stock.

The 12 FV is a good value and can be a great one. It lists for $419, Cabelas regularly puts it on sale for $319 and at the moment Savage is offering a $100 rebate. So I got mine recently for $219 plus tax. It could be used right out of the box to kill deer. Or, in my case, I stripped the barrel and stock and ended up with an action and trigger for not much money, perhaps as low as a hundred bucks if I can sell my unfired .308 barrel......... any takers?

There are obvious places where Savage saved money, the stock being the most notable. I'm not even going to give mine away, much less sell it............... it's that bad.

The action differs from the desirable Target Action in several ways. It has an Accutrigger, but it uses stiffer springs. However, it can be easily modified to closely mimic the Target version of the Accutrigger. The action has a magazine, so there is a large hole in the bottom making it less stiff then one might like and the larger port on the top does the same. So it isn't a Savage Target Action, but I seriously doubt if any lack of action stiffness is going to hold me back. I'm in no danger of becoming World Champion of anything until there is an afternoon nap division.

For my build I substituted a Boyd's stock and a Bartlein barrel to make an inexpensive F-open gun. A little work on the trigger and the addition of a nice scope gives me a gun which is more than competitive in regional 600 yd F-Class matches.

I was told by Savage that the rebate was not on that rifle.

What are the trigger modifications one can do?I have bought a few 12FV rifles and did exactly that you have done. Latest one without the nut.

Many 12 FV purchasers report that they have already received their rebate. My rifle was on back order for a long while so I didn't submit it until a couple of weeks ago, but my rebate was confirmed as being accepted and I expect to get it before too long.

The trigger mods I'm referring to are the usual things gunsmiths do to reduce hunting oriented triggers to match triggers. If you are qualified to do such mods, you already know what they are. If not, it's best to consult a gunsmith because fooling around with triggers can be deadly.

While the stocks on the FV12's are as described, and there are numerous comments about the plastic stock all over the web, you can still shoot .5" groups or better on a regular basis with the OEM stock. I've considered getting a Boyd's for my 2 FV12's (204 & 223) but I'm getting good accuracy with the OEM stock, so I haven't done anything yet.

The FV is also available in 22-250. Unfortunately, the rebate on the FV will end soon (Nov 29th) . Look for it again next year around June, that's when they usually go on sale too at Cabelas. If you go online to giftcardgranny.com or Ebay, you can find discounted gift cards to use during a sale and if the rebate is offered too, you can buy a new FV for under $200.

Toss the stock, sell the barrel and buy a better one, and there is a lot you can do to the bolt, action and trigger to improve it without having to send it to a gunsmith.

I use a 38 cal case head with a ball bearing in the primer pocket to make a bolt lift kit. I have the one shown in the video too. They both work equally well to reduce bolt lift.

Link to kit from Pacific Tool & Gage. http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/misc...red-savage-bolt-accessory-kit-w-o-handle.html

You should also be aware that there are three versions of the accutrigger. Standard as used on most hunting and LE versions, the Varmint accutrigger which can be set lighter and is used on all the varmint model 12's, and the Target accutrigger identified by the red trigger blade and is only available on the Target models.

I have found a couple of used Target Accutriggers online and put them on my FV actions. Simple replacement job that takes all of two minutes. But if you can't find one used, online, there are mods you can do to the trigger to make it lighter. Check out youtube for "how to" videos.

Happy shooting!

Edited to reflect sale still on until Nov 29th. $269.99 plus tax after rebate.

I bought one last summer for $275 out the door. Mine is a 22-250. I replaced the stock and bedded it. Shoots great groups now. Was so-so before.. My only complaint is I wish it had a box magazine.. But it serves my purposes..

I also got one during that sale. Same deal is on from Wed. Nov. 22-29th, according to the latest flyer.
Never a Savage fan, I bought the .22-250 for its 12-twist barrel, to stabilize the 53 gr. V-Maxes. Out of the box, I soon had it grouping cloverleafs; leaving the Tupperware stock on for now, as it's heavy but still "carryable" as is. Also comes with a jewelled bolt (which kind of detracts from the inherent Savage ugliness), and an oversized bolt handle. Loading rounds from the top under a scope is kind of a pain, but for the price I can live with it. As with any OTC product, there can be some duds in the system; from my experience and what I've heard/read, these bargain Savages seem to be a pretty safe bet for accuracy and reliability.

The rebate is good until December. I just purchased my second one. The first is a 22-250, and the latest is a 6.5 Creedmore. The 22-250 is a shooter. Without any modifications other than adjusting the trigger, I'm getting .5 moa at 600 yards. Definitely a bargain.

There is a 50 page link on the model 12 FV on the Savage shooter's forum.

Is the stock on the Cabela’s Savage FV similar to the Savage trophy hunter stocks? I have one of those, besides having to file and sand a few burrs in barrel channel I like it fine. Also is it an internal magazine like the one on the 12BVSS?

so the 12fv uses an action that is the same basic acrion as a PTA and uses large shank barrels? the differences being it isnt stainless, has a mag hole and a bigger loading port? also different accutrigger? sure is a big price difference between a 12fv on sale and an LRPV. Thanks
