Tikka t3x ctr or M700 Mil Spec

Son is looking to buy a new 6.5 CM he has 1k to spend. He will be hunting and punching paper. Looking hard at the tikka t3x ctr tac and m700 mil spec but open to suggestions (heavy/varmint barrel )

I do not own a Tikka but I have handled them and they are very smooth and well made. I believe it is a better option over a Remington m700.

I own both Tikkas and 700s, although my 700s are a few years old. I don't know about thier current production quality. I own 9 or ten Tikkas and they all shoot well with my reloads. Some older, some newer and they're all smooth as silk. Tikka would be my pick.

Tikka. Good trigger out of the box, action is smooth unlike the Remingtons, never heard of a Tikka bolt handle falling off or extractor failure, guaranteed sub-MOA (I have 5 and all shoot nearer 1/2" and rarely go over 3/4".
I have owned a boatload of 700's in my life and I am now down to only one, Tikkas have replaced them.

I have three Tikkas, two T3 lites, one T3X lite. I also have a bunch of old Rem 700's, 1970 to 1990's vintage.

1. The Tikka extractor system is far superior to the Remington.

2. The Tikka trigger is far superior to the new Rem X Pro trigger system, the latter being junk in my opinion. The old Rem triggers were very good and easily adjustable. This is a case where Rem "fixed" something that didn't need fixing and made it worse, much worse!

3. The Tikka action is far more smoother than the Rem. My Rems with detachable mag will not chambler the last round resulting in a jam. Not so with the Tikka.

4. The Tikka stock is far stiffer than the factory injection molded plastic Rem stocks. Also the barrel on the Tikka's is free floated which I believe along with my 40 year experienced rifle smith believe is far superior to the Rem pressure points on the fore end of the stock.

5. The accuracy is a wash, all my Remington's shot as well if not better than the Tikka's once I replaced the Rem stock or bedded it or free floated the barrel. The exception is the Rem varmint version with the heavy fiberglass stock with bedding blocks. These are real good.

I'm not sure about the quality of the new Rems. I've seen and shot a few owned by others at the club. The varmint ones with the fiberglass heavey stock shot very well but the triggers were replaced with Timmey Triggers.

i got a T3x in 270 and I am pleased after muzzle break (Kicks like a mule), vertical pistol grip and beaver tail forearm modular add-ons. I will be looking hard at the new stocks coming out for the Tikkas @ the shot show.
It goes 1/2 MOA w/several loads.

A 270? Have you ever been kicked by a mule? My cousin got kicked by a horse, once. He flew 15 feet and went over a post and rail fence, to boot! Broke his jaw. ;):eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::rolleyes:

For out of the box, I like the Tikka. As much as it pains me to say it.

Also, the aftermarket for the Tikka is growing stronger as well.

I have one semi-custom built on a Tikka and have a tube gun built on it happening now.

I'm sorry to say but one of the last Remington's I picked up in a store the primary extraction lugs completely missed each other, as in they did not even touch. I take that as a sign of the overall quality of the rifles these days. A real shame. Tikka's are really nice for the money.

@lacajun -
My recommendation is the Tikka. For out of the box factory rifles, Tikka has them all beat - IMO
Besides the smoother operating & coned bolt and nicer trigger, a comparison look at the chambers and down the barrels with a bore-scope will tell another story to why. From developed handloads, repeatedly seeing sub 1/2-MOA or better from Tikka's.

Absolutely love my tikka forest in 222. Absolutely a tack driver. I now have one to match it ordered in 243. Can't wait to see how it shoots. You can tell the Tikkas are made along side sakos. No comparison between the quality of a tikka and a remington.

Tikka CTR as others have said. I have yet to see or hear of one that did not shoot well. Plenty of aftermarket support and a nice action to build off of later.

I have had a couple Remington 700's that shot very well, but I would be tempted to bring a bore scope when I went to buy one today. My Tikka T3 lite is an excellent firearm. I would consider a 260 Rem due to ammo costs compared to the Creedmoor.

Love my CTR. BUT if you can pick up a good Rem action for a deal you can get a Criterion Remage barrel for a 6.5 Creed for $350, Drop it in something like the KRG Bravo Chassis that just came out and you have a pretty solid setup for around 1k. Subsequent chambered barrels are $300 since you’ll have the nut and wrench. Just another option for ya. Have fun with the project!
