OT Better Mouse Bait

Here is what I do so there is no stink.

50feet of 550 cord with a loop tied into one side.

Approach the cage from the door side. Keep low so the skunk will not see you.

Put a end though a hole in the mesh behind the locking bar.

Move away until the cord is end to end.

Put the free end into the loop and with the free end in your hand walk away.

This will tighten the looped end locking the cage closed.

Now just pull the cage away.

I have a big tank filled with water. There is a board that is a ramp so I can pull the skunk into the water.

A few minutes later the skunk is dead and does not stink. Empty into a plastic bag and toss into the trash or if you have a fire pit start a fire and burn it. Skunks burn amazingly well. raccoons I think are made of water and hardly burn.

If you shoot them they will spray every time.

Two thoughts on skunks:
Shoot them in the spinal column to paralyze them to avoid spraying.
They will not spray in a confined space; -like a wrapped, or covered trap.

Please describe how you get a skunk out of a trap, live or foot, without stirring up a stink. I have a skunk problem now and again but have not figured out how to get the stinker out of the trap safely
I had always heard they wont spray if they cant see. I have never tested it though

I bait mouse traps with peanut butter. I spread the pb on the trigger and wrap it with some strands of steel wool. This keeps em from stealing the pb the steel wool snags the teeth and snaps em

What kinda trap?? My grampa hated skunks. He made a trap out of a piece of pipe and built a false floor in it. He's then set it out and put an egg in the back. It was set up so the skunk could go in but couldn't get his tail up. It was also kinda small so the skunk barely fit in. It had a trap door like a guillotine that fell when the skunk went in and the floor tilted. The he had a loop welded to the top, and would tie a rope on and drop the trap and skunk in the creek. They skunk would spray under water somehow, and a oil slick would rise. Come back 15 minutes later and Mr skunk is DOA.

I did not have luck trying to cover them. I was not sprayed but the tarp was several times. I wonder if the spinal thing works. I removed a head and it sprayed. It is like a bullet no matter where I hit them causes them to spray.

I read where a heart/lung shot didn't make them spray but have never tried it myself.

I also heard if the trap is within range of a hose, spraying them in the face will keep them pre occupied and let you get close enough to the trap to tarp it.

I've tried neither so.....

Damn mice. We have a cat that catches them and brings em in the house. Then lets em go.. This is the first cat I have had that doesn't kill em dead.. The dogs try to get em. In fact when I had Cairn Terriers they were he11 on rodents.. A snake is the best rodent deterrent but I hate snakes!!

id kill the cat..

The Trap and PB then Hit it with a Light match.
i have a small Ranch a Mother Cat moved in few years Back . Then the Kittens came.
I had Mother and three Kids fixed. I gave one of the Kittens to the Guy down the road.
That Mother Cat Thanks me every day... The Two Sons I kept are the Killers Elite .....
I have nothing in or around the place. They leave the heads of the Unwanted by the shop door.
I feed them good food everyday . They thank me by keeping the Unwanted away...
Think it would work with other things ??

Dragging the skunk to water seems like a fun thing to watch. !
.
One year, I got asked to reduce the skunk population at a nearby orchard. It seems that the piles of rotted fruits and veggie piles, along with some ideal nesting locations had exploded the population in that area .. Some of them were getting sick, from who knows what, and coming out during the day, wandering thru the orchard, scaring the customers picking apples and stuff.
.
In my 100-day trapping season that year, from about a 500sq acres , I took 28 skunks, averaged about $8 each on the hides, and gathered about 20oz of pure golden nectar, that sold for about $125 .. Most trappers looked at them as a nuisance ,, and believe me, until I got a "system" in place to lower the risk of them spraying, it was frustrating for sure.
.
If you startle them, they spray. No if's or and's about it, In my early experimentation, If I used a subsonic-round, and got them straight thru the lungs, WITHOUT hitting the spine, they likely would cough-out without arching and spraying. ( About a 50% success rate)
Conibear, or body grippers would have about the same success rate,, MTP made a trap for awhile, now discontinued, called the MB-160-AC ,, and it was a skunk-slayer, but still didn't guarantee you wouldn't walk into a heavily aromatic trap set.. But was successful many times in breaking the skull or neck instantly. ( Still about a 70% success rate )
.
The best and only way to dispatch skunks, is some paint thinner, in a needle, on the end of a 7-foot stick. Carefully push needle between ribs, and inject 10cc full syringe into lungs rapidly.
They aspirate so quickly, they do not have time to get a shot off. ( 95% success rate WITH some practice ).
.
Cage traps are pretty easy,, cover them with a tarp BEFORE you catch a skunk, If they cannot see you coming, they don't get excited, and the covering makes them feel more confident to enter the trap. Quietly approach and slide into enough water to cover trap completely, or take your chances with other methods mentioned above. .
.
There,, probably more than you ever care to know about skunk trapping ,, LOL
.

Try a small piece of bacon in the trap too -mice like it almost as much as we do!:)

My record for a bacon-baited trap is 4 minutes flat.

Frank

This was my grandpas favorite. He taught us to use a very fine piece of sewing thread to tie it to the trap trigger. My brother called me a couple years ago and said he had a very cagey mouse that kept snapping his traps baited with peanut butter. I told him to bait bacon tied on like grandpa taught us. He called next morning, dead mouse.

I'd suggest 'lightening' the triggers on the old-school traps. Bend the vertical piece on the trigger to the point where it is very difficult to position the trap without it springing pre-maturely. Dead mouse every time since I started doing this.

This^^^ I've been doing "trigger jobs" on my traps for years. Be carefull they'll get your fingers if you get them too light!

On the skunk in a live trap. Place the trap in a 55 gallon trash bag leaving the door exposed. When said skunk is detained simply pull excess garbage bag over end of trap. Now you can relocate to a different area. Skunk will not spray. Lift garbage bag and open trap door. Dispatch skunk when it has reached a safe distance away ( I prefer 20ga). My granddad taught me that in the early 70's. Never had to throw away any clothes.

make a 5 gal bucket mouse trap. we call them murder buckets. my record is 11 in one night. many do better. lots of ways to build one

http://fivegallonideas.com/bucket-mouse-trap/

This really is the best mouse trap. Kinda large, but the good thing is that it don't stop at one...as long as the mice keep trying it keeps working. "Suicide" would be a more correct name than "murder"...after all, don't the mouse make the choice??? I never thought to try apples....will give it a go. Have had good luck with peanut butter. Don't dismiss bacon and bacon drippings either.
The best "one at a time" type mousetrap is the one called "The Better Mousetrap". Google it, or search Amazon....I don't know what it is about these things, but they will out catch/kill all the others put together...except the bucket...nothing can beat that.
The answer to the skunk in a live trap is starting fluid....walk up with a tarp so he cant see/spray you and cover him. Empty the can of starting fluid under the tarp and give it a minute or two to knock him out. Skunks are not like alcoholics... they cant spray when they are passed out!!!
