need some Win 70 safety diag help

I have a win 70 super grade. With the safety engaged a pull of the trigger will release the firing pin a small amount then on disengaging the safety the firing pin falls rest of the way. I am reasonably certain I have a firing pin issue POSSIBLY EVEN THE WRONG FIRING PIN. The safety does not look to be worn any. Neither does the cam on the firing pin nor the top of the sear. The rifle could be unfired by appearences, it could also be put together from parts the fellow had laying around.
MAIN QUESTION If firing pin falls on safety removal does it about have to be in the pin cam to safety fit? (this is after i pull the trigger with safety on)
It looks to me that the safety should retract the firing pin enough to disengage from the sear completely? Is this correct? I will have to check tonight bit i believe the serial number was 163xxxx
Thank You

The safety should lift the cocking piece off the sear completely. This is not happening in your rifle. The fact that you can engage the safety indicates that the safety cam and/or the mating surface on the cocking piece is worn or has been altered. No way to know without comparing with known good parts

How can I determine I have the correct firing pin? I am pretty suspicious that i have a bench scrounge build gun and maybe not be all from same bench! You say worn or altered and I see no evidence of either Having trouble uploading my pictures

You see! Remington was not the only design which occasionally had this problem. There are a few ways to fix this; from quick and dirty to laborious. One can just cut back the nose of the cocking piece, weld up and re-cut the safety notch, or replace the firing pin/cocking piece altogether. WH

All your answers are there for re-fitting.
I have several OEM uncut (new) firing pins for post 64 M70's if you need one.

It could be like you say and be kit-bashed together Possibly the trigger/FP/safety was never fit properly, if at all. You need to get it to someone who really knows what they are looking at. M70 fire control is not like putting an AR together.

I need to become someone who knows what they are doing!

Where are you located? Anywhere near central CA?
Im in Southern Indiana.
Might be close to Central CA in lattitude?
Is the standard "fitting" to remove material from the cocking piece ramp until the safety can fully disengage the firing pin?
My pin is either wrong or i need to add material to the cam the safety acts on. Adding material sure seems like a funny thing to be the easiest way to to it.

You wont have to tell me a third time. Ive ordered the set from Brownells!
If anyone else is interested in the Brownells Gunsmith kinks set there is a whole set on ebay for $75 shipped right now. Its only $95 from Brownells though

I recently needed a pre 64 model 70 firing pin. Winchester did not have any. I ended up using one of David Tubbs aftermarket firing pins and cocking pieces. Got it from MidwayUSA.

Screenshot_20171101-152853-720x1280.pngwell i figured out how to get the pictures in. The bottom one is what was in my bolt. The top one is very similar but the spring retaining collar is shorter. I cant imagine with the safety being so badly fitted that it came from winchester that way. The serial is G163xxxx that makes it a new North Carolina build doesnt it?

Send me your busted one and I can match it up for you. I have several new, unfit Win pins. Worse case you will be out the shipping cost if I dont have it. G serial guns are New Haven, Conn. Judging from your picture you have a push feed standard length action. Prior to the post 72 push feed short actions, ALL calibers were on same length actions.
Based on earlier posts about the possibility of a frankenrifle, your pin may not be right for your bolt.???
As far as fitting goes, it is not just a simple "cut or weld the cam and you're done" thing. There is a balance of all the related parts and depending on which part is out of whack determines the proper sequence to re fit them. That's why guys that know how to properly fit them get the big bux!

Wolfe has springs for Model 70's if you need a spring. The cocking piece should be cammed back about .060. The repair should well within the capabilities of any real gunsmith. WH
