Nowadays, you are better off using the Limited Quanities label (black/white diamond) rather than the ORM-D label. According to UPS, the older label is being phased out and the LQ label causes less fuss.

Jay, there is a long-ish story on that one. The ORM-D marking was supposed to have gone away several yrs ago to bring the US into line with international standards for shipping. It's only still in use in the US. Either works today. The ORM-D is a marking not a label, so there ins't any spec on it's size or coloration, the LQ label is a label and there are, so it's easier for most people to print the ORM-D. The ORM-D thing option will eventually go away.

I need to look into the regulation and see if the training requirements have changed with the LQ vs the ORM-D. If I recall correctly, (and it's not my normal area) ORM-D was one of the only things that untrained persons could put it transport. I know that other LQs require that the shipper have a minimum level of training in accordance with 49CFR172 subpart H

Still, he has a point: there are solid reasons why rules are in place, lives depend on them.

Guess we should Be Thankful stuff we take for granted can still be shipped ground.

I was using the term 'ORM-D' interchangeably with the 'LQ' label. About 1/3 of the time when I've shipped ammo, using the LQ labels because as you said, its what we're *supposed* to be moving towards / using... when it arrives they've been replaced - by someone in the UPS system - with ORM-D stickers. Apparently they haven't gotten the memo yet...

Yes, but it gave me the opportunity to make a point publicly.

This is what I do for a living, some of it seems trivial, some of it probably is, but in the end the Hazardous Material Regulation is there for a reason other than just to make life difficult.

And yes, I would wager on lithium batteries causing that fire. They have burned up a couple of airplanes in the last decade.

No, unfortunately no results were sent out or posted (that I know of) other than some guys posting pics to Facebook of scoresheets.
