243 lower node to save the barrel

After shooting across the chrony I would say that I do not need the top node velocity and have considered trying the lower node. Specifically I found the upper node of H1000 with the 108 Berger at 46 grains with Lapua brass. Velocity was 2950. I was thinking I could try 44.5 gr and lose maybe 100 fps. I figure this might really preserve the barrel and brass.

I am not sure about my buddies load, but he got 3800 rounds on his 243 barrel and used only 40 pieces of Lapua brass. His speed was somewhere around 2800 with the 105. Basically 6BR territory. I'll find out his load and post it.... Maybe. I know it is a cheap plastic stock Remington that's been worked over with a pencil thin Krieger barrel and muzzle brake screwed on. It is his "pickup gun", and he uses it to shoot pigeons out the window of his truck. I've seen some of the group's he shoots with his gun, pretty amazing!

Powder choice and barrel temperature may affect barrel life a bit but a 3% drop in powder charge will make little difference.

The lower charge will have an effect on brass life However.

Yes basically I would be happy with my 6br velocities.

I was wrong on the speed.......2972 FPS with the 105 berger..upper node 6 br....lower node Dasher.
powder....40 g IMR 4831
3800 rounds before decernable flyers showed up.

Is has 1400+ on his new tube...in about 10 months....shooting pigeons and crows!!

Those lower nodes were less reliable, day in and day out. The lower node seems to be influenced more by atmospheric changes than the upper node.

I haven't found that to be the case with the 308 MIA loads I shoot. Quite the opposite.

Why have a mediocre shooting gun that lasts longer? Put another barrel on it when it doesnt win matches anymore- if youre not in matches and push it another 500rds who will know? If you got a 1/4" gun that shoots 1/2" after its wore out will that really hurt your application? If it takes you 5yrs to get 1500rds on a hunting gun did you get your moneys worth?if you hunt with a bad barrel burner how many years til the third generation has to replace the barrel? These are all questions you must ask yourself when worried about shooting a barrel burner
