I'm Pissed

Hey Thud,
Tell that clown that f he doesn't like your asking price, he doesn't have to buy. As a "First Responder" for more that 31 yrs, I have never asked anyone to give me a "Special Price" for anything. If some business offers Military or "First Responder" pricing...fine....I'll take it. But to walk around with your hand out and claim some "special consideration" based upon your (or some close buddy's) occupation, is pure horseshit. Personally, I'd tell that BOY he can kiss me where the sun don't shine! Most of all Thud, don't waste your time or anger on some IDIOT who thinks he's entitle to freebees.

Alex

Thought this site had some kind of rules or guidelines on this same issue.

What happened to you is common when you deal with the "general public". No reason to be upset. Actually, when you post things you can kind of expect it. I have no solution on how to teach morality and "class". Add money to the mix and man is a viscous creature.

Glad you did not get burned in some kind of scheme.

A few years back, I used to post a few things for sale on the forums I belong to. I quit, for the simple reason I got tired of the low ball offers and being told what I should be selling the item for. I priced nothing out of line with fair market values at the time I listed. It's just too much PIA to bother with!

I would have just told him to buy it wherever he wanted, but l leave me alone. People like that don't have any respect for themselves.

I've sold a lot of items over the years by responding politely with my bottom line. Surprisingly (or not) these guys are just doing what they think is the best way to get your lowest price. If they really could get it that cheaply, they wouldn't bother to PM you.

On ebay I'll list a widget for $400. Get an offer for $45. Respond with $375. "This is my best price. I hope my counter is acceptable". Frequently my polite response is accepted. --Jerry

I'm military and get insane discounts. You usually have to jump through some annoying hoop to get it though. I really like dealing on the forum since it's direct, quick payments, and ships really quick. It's like your own personal customer service.

That dude was just a jerk. It's none of his business what you want to sell something for. If you want to sell a Rem 700 for 10 grand then so be it. Drives me nuts when guys are like, "I can get it cheaper." I instantly respond with, then go get it cheaper!!!

Lucky for all of us the vast majority of the Forum's members are 5 star kind of guys. Here and there comes along Mr Clueless, Mr Rude, Mr knowitall but the majority are not like that.

By the way Thud you sell a lot of very nice items and carry a good reputation. If the scope your talking about was in Mils I would have sent you a PM. Good luck with your sale!

Thud, A "gentleman" that had found out about my medical condition offered me $5,000 for my sailboat. It is priced at $40,000 and that is a large discount. It takes all kinds and a lot are bottom-feeders. P.S. It's a Valiant 40 if anybody is interested. Tom

Reminds me of a Craigslist ad I saw today.

text of the ad:

"If you are in a bind, I will pay cash for your high ticket items. If you are needing to get rid of something quick, let me know what you have and I will let you know if I can make an offer. I am not buying at retail or Blue Book as I am offering cash at a discounted price to help the both of us. Let me know what you have before you go to the pawn shop. Please email me what you have with some decent details. Thank you.

Cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, trailers, Rv campers, land, houses, equipment, "defense items", etc
  • do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers"
"...to help the both of us." What a jackass. People in dire straits can get ripped off anywhere. Why cruise Craigslist for it?

I biught from Thud also and had no problems. Like some others said, I it is posted in The rules not to attack another's ad. Matt

I have had nothing but perfect transactions on this site and 2 others. Selling stuff scares me more than buying stuff because my reputation is on the line. Once I had a gun listed for at least a week. Go figure, I get two offers at the same time. One by email and one by "I'll take it". The email time stamp was prior to the time stamp on the website. Looked clear to me and I notified both parties accordingly. The I'll take it guy took exception and wanted me to prove that he was not the first offer. Turns out he was. The site time stamp and email stamps were different time zones. He pressed the issue and I decided to contact the other guy and pull the deal from him. It was not fun. The guy that pressed the issue turned out to be a super nice guy but I felt for the other guy. I only had one gun and there was little I could do to please both of them. I am extra careful now with the acceptance of offers. There are challenges to the online classified that do not exist in a retail or face to face environment. Know this is slightly off topic but wanted to share how this type of marketplace can be challenging and a little nerve racking.
On the original post... if you throw out a big enough net, you will catch a bunch of fish you didn't want to hassle with. I would not let the bycatch get you down. Ignore the jerks.

Yes, I often run in to the "I can get them for $50 less" so I just ask them to pick me up a couple when they go there.

I've seen products listed here that I could indeed find cheaper someplace else. But who cares? The seller is allowed to ask for anything he wants. Someone may buy it and the rest will keep their yaps shut about it all.

Thud, one thing i am not clear on: was he trying to deal on the item you were selling? Or was he just questioning your pricing?

If he was trying to deal, just make an offer, simple... if he was just telling you its priced to high, shut the eeefff up and mind your own business, also simple.

That being said, there is something to be said about how much an item is worth to you, depending how ba di would like it gone. Some used stuff i have priced so low that either someone it the market for the item thinks i lost my mind, or someone who doesnt need it will buy it because they cant pass it up, usually stuff i have no use for. I have also had stiff sitting around and thought, i am not using that right now but i wouldnt mind keeping it around, but it i can get top dollar for it i would sell it.
Either way, make an offer or go away

Yet another example of where simple supply and demand will work, if allowed to. Items priced too high won't sell, or won't sell quickly. Most will rarely ever see an item priced too low, because it will be sold instantly. I'm glad you told the individual to pound salt. It's up to the seller to set the selling price, not the buyer. The buyer simply gets to choose whether they want the item at that price.

Sounds like an appeal from a Fence for stolen goods

Whatever an item sells for between a seller and a buyer is what it is worth. Doesn't matter what it sold for yesterday or earlier today. Many times I have left my farm with a $1200 cow and somehow it was only "worth" $800 when I got to the stock yard. It always amazed me that somehow I could flood the market by selling one item.
