20 Vartarg 39 grain Sierra BlitzKing loads using H4198

I've searched and can't find much info on this bullet/powder out of a 20 VarTarg.

Anyone willing to share their starting powder charge and give a general idea what is considered a maximum load with the Sierra 39 grain BlitzKing bullets and H4198?

I have things dialed in for 32 and 35 grain loads, but want to try the 39 grain bullets. I know how sensitive these small 20 calibers can be with small powder variations.

HaroldM is definitely one guy that would know. I believe he shoots H4198 and 39 Sierras in his vartarg varmint hunting rifle. I have comfortably shot 17.8gr of H4198 with the 40 Bergers and Federal 205 primers. That combination, despite going slower than my load with 32 zmaxs, was still very destructive on ground squirrels.

My records show 16.5 grains (F-205s, 39 BK), with the bullet touching the leade, seals OK, and produces a velocity of 3200 fps. In my rifle, with "good" Remington brass, that should be an acceptable starting load. As you work up, don't increase charge until you've verified that primers seat with appropriate resistance at the lower load. My first indication of a problem was loose primer pockets. Appearance of primers and bolt lift were still OK until a primer blew. As you approach 3450 fps, consider stopping. There is some really nasty brass out there and there is no way we can positively differentiate between high pressure and problematic brass.

You would think with 17 pages of posts to that thread it would be covered but I've scanned every page twice and it isn't addressed. If you have seen it addressed in that thread, can you point me to which page the information I've ask for is on? I could have missed it since I skipped over some of the pissing match posts.

Harold got back to me with a starting powder charge of 16.5 grain of H4198. If I don't hear otherwise, I will go with Jason's 17.8 limit as a maximum charge.

A question I didn't ask - anyone have a recommendation on seating depth? Jam, off jam, at lands or off lands?

Sorry to have led you astray, I though for sure it was in there.

Same guy, Hillbillysniper, but a different post. I have found his loads to be safe compared to most other internet loads.

I am 20-30 thousandths of lands on my rifles and they seem to like the jump. You should be able to get to 18 Gr of 4198 depending on your brass.

On the saubier.com forum, I used "Advanced Search", keyword "39gr" and User Name of "HillbillySniper" and found a thread from 5-13-2014 "20 Vartarg 39gr Sierras":

I just loaded up 50 rds of 20 Vartarg with Sierra 39gr Blitzkings with fed205 match primers and 18gr of H4198. Groundhogs better stay in their holes this summer! This load is Super Accurate in my Lilja 12 twist Rem varmint barrel.

etc.

Why are you wanting to use H4198 with 39BK? From my experience that is sort of a misfit application. If you use AA2200, you can get a lot better performance & still keep pressures in a reasonable range.
