Another check list

Seeing BenPerfected's check list thread has reminded me (hey, it works!) that a GSW based first aid kit might not be a bad addition to my range bag/day pack.

Any first responders here have a good recommendation for a basic GSW kit contents?

Band aids
Neosporen, gauze, bullet wound stuffing material, an AED on a range would be smart as hell but never seen one before at ranges, rope, stretchy wraping material, cloths, tape, scissors, splint material, knife, eye wash, water, alcohol, peroxide, alcohol wipes, patch type bandaids... even then some of this stuff is above the average joes knowledge of medical aid... but some of this stuff used in various situation can help a lot. Just gotta think of each situation you could face and have stuff to deal with it....

I keep my Holy Sh-t Kit in the trunk. They can be bought as complete as you think you have the ability to use many places on line......Good thing to have handy these days with a few "truck guns" as well.

Well, yes 911 is the answer, but to rely solely on a phone call for life and death is liberal logic. We all know that most ranges aren't close to town for the quickest response times.

I've seen many of the off the shelf kits containing some things that are just plain useless for most all situations. For instance, a suture kit, unless I'm more than a days travel from any civilization I'm not going to suture a wound. I would want to clean and control any bleeding until it can be properly addressed by professionals.

Beyond the basic band-aids, antibacterials, NSAID, tape and gauze, i want a couple Isreali bandages, a chest wound valve or two, an airway, and a touniquit. Oh, and a few bloodstopper stuff it in kits and a couple tampons to fill bullet holes.

Easiest thing is to go to a store that sells a bunch of this kind of stuff and walk the isles, and look... grab stuff that you can use and know how to use. All depends how advanced your skills are... could go as far as bags of saline and IV set ups for dehydration and more.

I still think an AED should be on every range, thats a huge thing to have on hand, way more than band aids and such. But they are expensive.

when's the last time somebody got shot at a rifle match? I know I live a sheltered life here in SW Idaho, but we just require the rifle to be pointed down range. Especially until after the bolt is removed.

It's not the competitors on match day to worry about. It's going to the public range on a Saturday morning to test something and bubba two lanes over is testing out his "YouTube special trigger job" with a full magazine in his AR15 when it goes full auto. (True story, btw, no one got shot that time, thankfully)

Things happen. Removing the bolt does not solve the issue. I bet at every big match there is at least one shooter thinks his bolt is removed when it is not.

First Aid Kits are similar to firearms in that you need to be trained to use it properly. It you want to be a medical care provider / first responder get trained! Short of that, lots of 4x4 pads and pressure followed by a call to emergency services is the thing you can do for someone.

First aid kit is ok but Quick Clot & a Turniquet is what's needed to save someone's life after they been severy wounded by a gunshot.
If you have not been trained on how and more importantly when to use a tourniquet, do not buy one.

I had maintained first aid and CPR certification for a while but haven't in a number of years. I do know that tourniqets aren't really recommended anymore due to causing more tissue damage though.

May be a good time to redo my certificate.

yep, for many reasons.

And I prefer tissue damage to dead....just in case anyone shoots me keep that in mind if you are the guy with the belt and stick and old Molly Hatchet T-shirt you are gonna stuff in my wound. So if I am spraying, please shove some qwik clot, the t shirt in the hole, and tie off above the bleed with the belt, cram that wrench in as a windlass and twist till it stops, eh?. You might even tell me I am going to live (in a reassuring voice)...cause I am gonna be screaming and begging you to save me while calling you every nasty name I can think of. Thanks in advance. :)

It is not a "possibility of tissue damage" issue. You do not apply a tourniquet to a limb you are not willing to lose. Tourniquet are designed save lives not limbs. If someone who doesn't know what they're doing, applies a TQ you may lose that leg/arm. People seem to run out and buy these thinking that somehow it will save someone's life, like it does in the movies, but that's not how it works. Just like when the TV doctors use a defibrillator someone to start a heart, that is not how it works, pure Hollywood. Same goes for CPR, the rate of full recovery for an injured party requiring CPR is around 3%. What happens if the injured partly has a chest/torso wound? What about an allergic reaction? What about Heart attack, broken limbs, seizure, ect, etc.

Long story short... Get Training! Take a Combat Care course if you want to learn about GSW. Take a WFR course if you think you will need to provide aid far from medical services. This is not about equipment, you cannot just buy gear and think you are gonna save someone.
