Twist vs Bullet - 270Win

Been offered the proverbial 'too good to be true' deal on a Win Model 70 from last year that has only be used for one hunting trip. With a 24" barrel and the standard 10" twist, what is the heaviest bullet one could shoot? I know that the 170gr Hunting VLD won't work and likely not the 160gr SPBT. I'm torn, as it is being offered at such a good deal and I was going to build an elk rifle.

The 150gr Nosler Long Range Accubond works just fine in my 270. It's all you need for elk.

150 VLD, 145 ELD X works the 270 is at its best with a 150 and it will take anything you shoot. The 270 has been getting it done for a long time. yea you can get better flatter shooting, more energy ect ect but the facts are the 270 win is a game stopper. period . You can dream up what you want to but when it comes to real world and getting it done the 270 win works. 270 user/hunter and witness of many 270 win impossible shots. I have one and cant part with it although there are better and more fun things to shoot. The 270 is just boring shot it dead animal ect ect just kind of boring. I prefer hunting with a 105 6XC more of a challenge shot placement at 750 has to be dead on where the 270 just point and shoot dead. kind of boring. The 7 Mag with the high BC bullets great stuff. but you will need that to outperform the old 270 . I have mine set up with a 5-20 NF and the 145 ELD X at 3,030 FPS always fun testing a new bullet. but I bet it will be boring in a year.

145 eldx at 3030 sounds wicked. Gotta love them 270s on game. Many guys don't give it enough credit jumping up to bigger guns for elk. Just not necessary. Sure the 7mm out performs them on paper so do many other bullets and calibers but proof is in the history of this cartridge. It gets it done. Just as the 06 has for years of service in the hands of hunters.

I love a 24" barrel on a .270. With a little load testing, you should be able to pump up the MV nicely with any bullet you choose. Mine will run 130 grain SST's at 3214 FPS with a big dose of H4831SC. Don't discount the old standby 150 grain Nosler Partition bullet. Not as sexy as some of the newer high BC bullets, but there is a reason they still make them after all these years.
