$35,000 long range shooting match

So what are the winning guys running for cartridges?

284 Shehane Erik won with his chopped off F-Class target rifle first match. (now not compliant)
Tournament 2 was won with a 6XC
Tournament 3 was won with a 6 Creedmoor.
6's and 6.5's made up the grand majority of cartridges that advanced and were in the finals.

I'm running a 7 SAUM. My opinion too much rifle for this match even with muzzle brake. and I do agree with the above about the single shot has no advantage on accuracy. In fact, I believe a repeater has the advantage (in this format) with the ability to stay on the rifle and you can burn through all of your rounds in 45-90 seconds. some even finished much quicker than that. I didnt care for the rule as I had to build a rifle to meet the requirements for this match format. But i'm happy I did. I really enjoyed the match, the shooters that I visited with and the organizers are great folks.... So was a great investment for me. I hope they continue to gain more shooters and sponsors to support the matches.

Single shot may not be an improvement in accuracy, but as Johnny noted could slow some people down enough to be a time issue. Conversely, having to use a repeater might put some limitations on load development (COAL) for some calibers due to mag length. I'm wondering if it might be of benefit to use a long action format in this game with those calibers where COAL/mag length might affect the "optimal" load.

exactly correct. you could easily run the 284 variations in a long action or even a hot 6.5. I believe there are a few building, (well I know they have been built :) ) but the laser accurate, Dashers, 6XC, 6.5 CM, 6CM, etc are all just fine running quickly as a bench rest shooter would do. and with almost zero recoil or torque.. you can sure smoke some tiny groups at those preliminary distances: 500 and 700 with those
"pea-shooters" ;) and they are so much more enjoyable to load and shoot... guess what i'm thinking to do ? ;)

If it's only out to 700 yd, I'm thinking a .223 with 90 VLDs would be fun and also with very little recoil. But you'd need a much longer action in order to load them to mag length. A .22BR with 90s might also be fun, and a little closer in performance to the 6's. In any event, it sounds like there is a lot of interest in this shooting format and I'm sure folks will have fun with it regardless of what they bring to shoot.

They shoot in stages. Typically 500 first distance. top 50% advance to second distance that has previously been 700 yards. The finals have been slightly over 1000 last two matches. I believe 1050 and the last match was 1070. You must shoot same rifle all the way through as you advance. No bringing a golf bag of rifles ;) LOL!

Instead of a golf bag of rifles, maybe it would be possible to cut a barrel into 2-3" sections starting from the muzzle, and thread the sections so they screw back on with the rifling un-interrupted. That way, you could shoot the same rifle and simply screw on extra barrel sections to boost your velocity as the distance increased. I'm just thinking outside the box here...;).

I would shoot my Stiller Tac 30 8 twisted Krieger 243 Win in the AICS 1.5 Chassis ,,with bipod and 8-32 Sightron it weighs 17 lbs and with the 105 HVLD`s at 3225 is a lazer and easy to shoot well prone,,

I would think with a 10 round mag I could get off those 10 shots really fast without having to get out of position,,

with those e-targets I bet that would be really fun,

They make the rules and pay the money
You have two choices abide by the rules or don't go . lol Larry
I think you may have misunderstood me. I'm not saying I'm not ok with not allowing BR/F-class rifles. What I'm saying is that by not allowing them specifically in the rules they don't need to ALSO not allow singleshots. But it really doesn't matter to me as I'm not going to shoot that competiton.

They made the rules for a reason . I'm not the person to tell them what to do .
Age is the only factor that would stop me from going .

That looks perfect. The only catch could be the rear bag into the total weight. The bag counts as part of the 22 pound total kit budgeted weight.

if I could afford all the fees and travel I could come up with a bag to make weight,,but yeah that Dr. Flattop bag weighs over 22 lbs by itself,,

Whats the advantage of using a BR rifle if it must be shot from a bipod? I think it was lame they threw that rule in there after Erik won. If you take away a Br or F-class rifles bags and put it on a bipod it has zero advantage over a tactical rifle. I suspect the rules were not written by someone who has a lot of match experiences. Comes off like they are scared of Br or F-class rifles and their magical powers, lol.

Just learned about this, payout has certainly grabbed my attention! Mill Creek is only 2.5 hrs away from me, shooting the Mill Creek PRS match two weeks prior to this match. My rifle meets the rules, 18lb Dasher. My concern, it looks boring. Shoot 10rds, that's it for day one....

johnnyi, if move on to round two, does the score from round one carry over? Thanks.

All of the shooting is in one day. First round usually around 8:00-9:00 am. Round 2 is usually around 10:30 or 11:00. (Very rough estimates I don't recall exactly). Then round 3 is shortly after. The Cresson Match was only my second match. round 3 and finally seems like it was completed by 2:30 or so...? But this is all one day. The second day is the classification shoot based on what you finished on Saturday. Its kind of a second chance shoot for the middle of the pack.

Your dasher will likely be awesome. It's typically posting near the top or top score for round 1 at 500. Top score in Cresson was 94 (6 Creed) Dasher 91 out of 100. I believe it took a 76 or 78 to make the top half cut to advance.

The winds were low moving to mild. Low heat waves. 5-8 mph round one.

Round 1 in Oklahoma top scores were 88 out of 100. Winds were about double in Cresson. Mid teen mph with gusts over 20.

Yes your score carries over as you advance. Ring sizes remain the same as you advance from 500-750-1000+. Last 3 shoots have been 1050, 1070, and 1250 in Cresson.

Top scores as I can recall are usually: 90's round 1. Low 80's round 2 and low 60's to upper 50's round 3. (Should give you an idea)

Well, looks like Im out. 2 of my hunting rifles meet all the requirements but they are single shot. I personally do not like repeaters, and they are not needed for long range hunting. Thats an odd rule. I would have just said no flat bottom stocks. The repeater cut has no bearing on accuracy. I have one repeater, but the barrel would melt with 10 shots in 3 minutes LOL

They are not needed but it is nice to just work the bolt and be ready. It is nice to be able to carry all my ammo I magazines.

I don't know much about the rules but my guess is your safety would be ok. The rule was added because Eriks rifle didn't have a safety at all, which is typical of bench rest rifles.
