Lr ammo sorting ?

Which is the best method case gauge or weight? I tried both with mixed results sk standard ammo. Case gauge gave me almost perfect vertical. While weight sorting I was getting 2 groups almost identical just 1/4" or so apart. Should I first sort by thickness then even father by weight? I know it's not the best ammo just looking for a fairly cheapish option. Shooting a cooper model 57.

That is what i was told at my first ARA match this past weekend.. that i would most likely find better results with weighing the Lapua.. i used to shoot a lot of Wolf Match Target.. i did use back then a Bald Eagle Rim Gauge.. i ascribe to the notion that it really doesn't make your ammo more accurate as much as it might make your flyers more consistent, meaning that all of your flyer ammo will now be grouped together in the same sorted box.. all you have to do is center up.. I did make this today.. just to revisit that concept and see if it is true in my past experiences..



i am not totally done with it. But i am at a start for sure!

I weight-sort everything but Midas+ into 0.1gr lots. Haven't needed to with Midas+. Factory sorts it tighter than that.

i am going to try that this coming weekend.. i shot some groups yesterday, but it was so blustery at times, i don't know if the flyers were me, the wind or the ammo

I bought the Rim Thickness Gauge and the Bearing Surface kit for .22 RF and sort by those as well as weight. The better ammo (higher cost) seems to be more uniform to begin with, which I would expect, but since I am anal compulsive, it gives me another reason to waste a lot of time. Some day I will actually take the time to test some real missed matched lots and see just how much difference it makes.

I don't shoot benchrest. Am shooting .22BPCR (50, 100, 150 & 200m) & 200yd on the Schuetzen German 25-ring target. My (our - several of us shoot these matches) and our experience is the less expensive spread (Norma Match at the lower $$ end and Lapua Center-X at the higher $$ end), when weight-sorted, is good to 100yd, and maybe 150yd. However, one needs Midas+ or similar to hold a tight enough group at 200yd & 200m to be competitive. We are all shooting good barrels, with the Shilen rachet-rifled barrels being the most used. The winners circle is always filled with folks who shoot the high-priced spread. My mantra is "see what the winners are shooting". They generally have their equipment & ammo worked out to the point that the only variable is the person pulling the trigger.

I shot this five shot group today.. testing tuner position, forearm position and finger control.. it is Norma Tac-22 (RWS) weight sorted to the 1k of a gram (equals about .02 grain) wind was squirrely today and i managed to wait till there was a consistent wind for five shots.. took about 5 minutes to shoot the group..

I just got a nice cooper model 57m and starting to play with it. I played with the torque setting on the stock until I can get pillars and full length bedding added. So far it's showing out really nicely. But looking to shoot the upper to mid range ammo and was looking to get the most bang for my buck. Thanks guys.

When weighing 22 rimfire rounds, how does one separate case, powder and bullet weight spreads in rounds all the same weight?

That's easy, you don't, that is why, generally, you're wasting your time unless you buy crap ammo which also means....surprise......you're wasting your time.

Bob these groups are terrible. I've never seen any of the ammo mentioned shoot that poorly. I'm sorry, but you may want to look for a solution. i.e. ignition, bedding, self, etc.. Again, sorry but you should get better than that out of the ammo & the rifle.
