Savage extractors

So. I have been having problems with extraction on my Savage model 12 .223. While removing the extractor to inspect it, well let's just say the term exploded view applies. The spring stayed in the bolt, and I found the ball, and while I know the extractor is in the gun room SOMEWHERE, it's exact location remains elusive.

My question is, are the model 10/110 and model 12 extractors the same? And this rifle has a low round count, so does anyone make a better extractor?

Thanks for looking.

One gallon Ziploc (or any other such transparent poly bag) bags are indispensable when disassembling spring loaded mechanisms. Work inside of them to catch launched components.

Yeah, and I knew that. Let's just chalk it up to 'temporary insanity', please?

Sharp Shooter Supply is said to have a better one.

I've read as much, too. I was hoping someone could tell me if they had a positive experience with this, or any other, replacement. I'd prefer to do this once, if possible. Thanks for the reply.

Never had an issue with a factory one myself. If it is a situation where it doesn't grab enough of the rim, one thing that helps is to use an oversized ball. Go one step larger diameter and stay under the hole diameter. Can't remember off the top of my head but want to say either 9/64" or 5/32" from 1/8". With the small ball the extractor will slide over easily and not put much tension back into the rim.

It's also cheap and easy to have spares on hand if you are going to do a lot of shooting and/or matches.

The OEM extractor is one Savage P/N fits all calibers, it has changed appearance over the years but it ain't caliber specific. Midway used to sell OEM Savage parts. If they are now selling aftermarket extractors its news to me.

OK. Thank you VERY much. I couldn't imagine the extractors were different, but I'm not a Savage expert, which is why I asked here. Thanks again.

Yeah teele1 jogged my memory, it is a 9/64" or .140" ball. A good hardware store should have some. Try your local Ace. This helps in some cases, sometimes the small ball doesn't let it force enough of the lip over the rim of the case. Try the 1/8" ball first, then the .140", see if it makes a difference.

I can't say for current production but the extractor of the 204-223 was-is longer from the ball detent to the outside. If they're used with a.47x" rim they'll contact the inside of the receiver when they jump the rim. The .47x extractors can be used for the 204-223.
Also check the ejector.

If its like the one on the right replace it with the one of the new style on the right with the follower (tail). You should also install a new spring togethe. Both the new style ejector and spring are available directly from Savage parts. It also advisable to replace the extractor .125" detent ball with a .140".
Another thing to look for is a sharp corner on the forward corner of the lug race.

It tends to grab a case and rip it out of the extractor. As as matter of SOP I knock both the top and bottom off whenever I have a barrel removed. It doesn't take much. Some say it can be reached with a flat needle file through the port but I haven't tried.
Other than my 3 brass pickers all my Savages(16) with those mods extract-eject flawlessly.
