Action Screw Torque

The recommended action-screw torque for my Cooper M21 is 35 in.-lbs. front screw; 25 in.-lbs. rear screw. I have had the action pillar bedded, with glass all through the action area. How will this affect the optimal action-screw torque values?

I don't believe in using pre-set values or even light values. I torque them all tight! starting with the front first then the rear. It works for me.

My understanding is that when you pillar bed an action, the action is drawn down until it contacts the top of the pillars. In other words, if you apply 25 lbs of torque to all screws and the action is contacting all the pillars, then there is nothing to be gained by adding more torque on top of the 25lbs needed to contact the pillars.

I swap Barnard actions in and out of a v-block stock all of the time. I tighten the screws until they don't tighten any more and call it good. I have also tested loads for nodes before and after doing this. Same powder charge was needed to find the node each time.

Torque would obviously be more critical in a factory rifle where pillar bedding is not present.

Just my .02.

The same values should work just fine. Maybe bump the front to 45"lbs if you like. These are the values I use with very good results.
