I came across some government issue ammunition today that I am not familiar with.
7.62x41
7.62x51
7.62x54
I know they are 308 but do they all have their own distinct chamber or will they all shoot in a 308 win. chamber? I am not up on military issue ammo.Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Jim

7.62x 51 is .308. 7.62x54 is Russian and is about .312", not .308" in diameter. I'm not sure about the 7.62x41.

Not up on military stuff, but isnt the x41 some short form of the FAL or some other western Europe CETME chamber? It is shorter than NATO x51.

The only one that could be considered 308 winchester is the 51. And military guys will dicker about that!

Forgot to say. The 7.62x51 is a NATO cartridge. Any of these could haven corrosive primers and can severely damage your barrel if not cleaned right after shooting. And they may have Berdan primers like the left side of the picture, very hard to reload. Some of the Russian ammo is steel cases and the bullet is steel over lead with a copper wash.

If your not 100% sure don't do it.. 7.62x54 is indeed Russian and not for the .308 win... They all should have their own chamber.. As stated above 7.62x51 is the military version of .308 win.. The pressure is a little less than the .308 hunting round we use..

7.62x41 was from what I understand used to test early sks later to be changed to 7.62x39 which is commen now..

The 7.62x41 sks rifle are far and few between some say maybe 2 in the country on one board.. Don't know if thats true..

So,the 41 version should chamber and shoot in the 7.62x39 since it has the same case body but just a little longer neck ? Help me out here.
Thanks,Jim

Don't know. 2mm difference in neck length can sometimes keep a round from chambering. You might need to use a chamber-length gage to know. Or just an empirical test could suffice.

It does have the longer neck.. I do not know if it will chamber safely in a 7.62 x 39 chamber.. If it were me and the rifles are hard to even find I would see if the ammo is worth selling to the right person..
